I had an odd thought the other day, I recently purchased a senator and was curious, if I were to replate it in gold would it still be considered a senator or would it be considered a sheraton?

It's still a Senator IMO. Just replated in gold.
At first glance, those contemporaries are rather similar, but on closer inspection other physical differences are present besides plating.
