What's new

Thank you Mr. Postman!

I got a notice this morning from the post office telling me that I had two packages waiting.

Two, not one.

And both from the US.

Strange.

I knew that I had a package coming my way form WCS so the contents of one was a given but I could simply not remember the other package.

Turns out it was my long overdue shaving bowl from Symmetrical Pottery.

Woohoo!!

Got brutalized by customs and import fee but still...

Woohoo!!

The goodies:
One blue Frosted B&B boar brush
One Thayers Witch Hazel, alcohol free
One Simpson travel tube for my Classic
And, finally, after waiting almost 4 months: My new custom colored sheet metal shaving bowl

The haul.

Great!
Enjoy!

PS. And please forgive the Government of Denmark for the high fees! I'm sure your money will be spend wisely.

I'm actually looking forward to trying the Witch Hazel.

I've heard so much about it on B&B that when the brush became available, I had to make sure I got everything I needed in this shipment.

Too bad I couldn't get the regular version.

Pesky US laws preventing international shipping of stuff containing alcohol...

Witch Hazel is a North American thing, isn't it? Seems it originated in my home state of CT. Can it not be found in the drugstore in Denmark?

No chance.
I've been searching for two months here in Denmark and haven't found it anywhere.
My only option is from the US because, even with import fees, it's still a lot cheaper than fx. getting it from the UK or Germany.

Oh well.
I'll just have to convert more buddies to proper shaving so we can buy bulk ;-)

Great!
Enjoy!

Free education and universal healthcare.
Pah!!
What use are those when I can't order fancy stuff from abroad ;-)

I'm currently waiting on a badger brush, a Gillette super adjustable from Bulgaria and a Gillette slim adjustable from the US, HURRY UP CANADA POST!

Bananhunden, you have a fantastic shaving bowl, and other nice things! My wife and I will be in Copenhagen on 16 May during a cruise stop. Through the cruise line we will be taking an escorted walking tour of various sites in the city, with time out for shopping. Can you provide us with the names of some stores for men's shaving supplies, and women's toiletries, in case they happen to be on our route? Thanks in advance.

Americano, eh?

We charge you extra! :p

Kidding aside though, I'll have to warn you, CPH is crazy expensive when you factor in the exchange rate between USD and DKK.

Here's a few suggestions, don't mind the improvised translations ;-):

Strøget: The shopping street. Starts at the town hall square (Rådhuspladsen) and ends at the Kings square (Kongens Nytorv)

Købmagergade: Other shopping street that crosses the first one

Illums: Department store in the middle of strøget. First floor filled with make up, jewelry, perfumes etc. mostly ladies stuff.
There's a corner with mens perfumes as well. A corner, go figure

Magasin: Department store at the end of strøget, very close to Illums. Again, First floor with lady stuff and a puny corner with shaving supplies. Very puny, two soaps and a crappy brush. I wouldn't go there for that shaving stuff.

Crabtree & Evelyn: Right next to Illums, or behind it actually. Apart from lady stuff they have a fine selection of T&H shaving gear.
Address, Silkegade 21
Bonus: Cigar shop right next to it. Excellent service and big selection of high end cigars, cognacs etc.

General toiletries you can find at Matas. Just look for the blue and white sign. There are half a dozen of those on the walking streets.

Frederiksberg Center. The one place I would recommend for shaving supplies would be the Matas, Mens Shop, at the second floor of this department store a short distance from the city centre. Just follow the moustaches inside the shop ;-).
Directions: The best way to get there is with the Metro.
There are two likely Metro stations on your route. The first is at Kongens Nytorv, where Strøget ends, in the square behind Magasin.
Big glass pyramid, hard to miss.
The second is at the end of Købmagergade, the other shopping street, Station name is Nørreport st.
You'll find the Metro pyramid by crossing the chaos of the regular station. Just keep going in a straight line ;-)

You'll be heading to Frederiksberg st.

The department store is right next to it.

Another site would be Torvehallerne: Big marketplace with a lot of delicacies. And one high end knife vendor that sometimes also sells straight razors.
Directions. The Metro at the end of Købmagergade at Nørreport st. If you continue 50 meters further down the road, after the glass pyramid, you'll find the market on your left.

Finally, you can ask anyone for directions in Cph because you'll be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't speak English.

I think that's it.

I might miss a post on this thread so, if you need advice and time is of the essence, you're more than welcome to PM me if you have other questions

Take care and have a nice trip :)

I love unexpected occurrences especially when it involves shave gear getting delivered! Well worth the wait on the bowl I bet

Sounds great :)

Here's a little more info, just for fun.

If you have enough time to move around in the city then I strongly recommend using public transportation.

For short rides it's just as quick as a taxi.

One/two trips then a regular ticket is fine but, depending on the distance, it might be better with a taxi.

More than that and you might consider buying a pass with 10 travel vouchers

The "2-zone" pass will enable you to travel anywhere in and around the centre of cph

Fx. if you wanted to go to Frederiksberg Center, from the centre of cph, it would cost you about the same whether you took a cab or bus/metro because 2 x tickets would cost almost as much as the cab ride.

It might sound like a long trip but it's just 2,5 km from the town hall so it's actually within walking distance :)

On another note.

When in Rome... You drink wine.

In Denmark, we drink beer ;-)

If you're interested in sampling a vast array of brews then I'd recommend three places:

Den Tatoverede Enke:
Location in Boltens Gård. It's very close to the Kings Square, not even a five min. walk
The specialize primarily in Belgian beer but they have a huge international selection, both on tap and bottled

Ølbutikken:
A store that specializes in beer. They're not particularly cheap but it's all high quality
Address: Istedgade 44
It's actually just a 5-7 min walk from the central trainstation down Istedgade, maybe 300m

Mikkeller:
Internationally acclaimed Danish micro brewery has opened their own bar.
This is the creme de la creme of Danish breweries
Address: Viktoriagade 8
Following the direction to Ølbutikken, from the trainstation, you turn left two streets earlier, 100m and you're there

Enjoy your stay :)

Toni, thanks for your response!! We purchased Danish Kroner for shopping already.

I hate the import fees, normally just send it to people and have them bring it over in person. The cost is actually worth the hassle

Sweet brush and bowl though

Even with the fees it usually is cheaper than buying it from a EU country.

But I really think the fees i DK are too much when you can buy Danish stuff from fx. the US and it still is cheaper fro there includng the fees.

This shipment also just missed my last BST purchase. It would have been nice combining them as a "gift".

I just tried out my new bowl, brush and witch hazel this morning and I can only say that I'm very, very, satisfied with my morning shave.

Now it just ticks me off even further that it's impossible to buy Witch Hazel in Denmark...
