Does anyone know of anywhere in the Uk that sells these? Most of the ones I've seen look too small (10cm diameter). What should the ideal dimensions of a good bowl/mug be, and what does everybody else use and where did you buy it (in the UK)

I got a beautiful one off ebay. Cost about £4,99 Inc delivery. It is also only about 10cm in diameter (inside) but it is only about 4-5cm high, which compensates.
A decent cereal bowl from places like Habitat will work very well.
You could try a large coffee/latte cup. That's all I use and it works fine. I am sure mine is only 10cm or so across too.

For a decent lather bowl, get something that is 4.5in to 5.5in (11.5~14cm) diameter, 1.5 to 2.5in (3.5~6cm) tall, with a non-white roughly glazed interior so you can see the lather develop, crockery or stoneware to retain heat, Cheap, £1-£4 at some discount outlet, the UK equivalent of Wal-mart, Target, K-mart, etc.
Avoid 'purpose made' shaving bowls/mugs --they're a poor value and most are unsuitable other than for holding a soap.
Of course you could always acquire a fine soap and lather directly on the face...

edit: As above, latte mugs do work pretty well.

I just measured the coffee cup I use and mine is 110mm across and 60mm deep. Pretty much as John says. It is white but you can see the lather forming fine.
I just went to IKEA and picked up a large soup bowl for about £1.50 and that works fine. I soak my brush in an old coffee mug which I smuggled out of my kitchen cupboard into the bathroom.

I got a big cup/bowl from Wilkinsons for 99p
Its got Soup written on the sides in large lettering. I think someone uses one in their SOTD pics in that forum if you want to see it.

This is a picture of my shaving mug. Its a great thing, and sometimes you can pick up nice ones similar to this one on ebay.
When I use a bowl (less and less these days, face lathering is wonderful) I use a stainless steel pet food bowl which cost me 65p in The Range. They have them in sizes from mouse to St Bernard which I could sit in! I put it in the water in the sink to keep warm.

I bought a plain white cereal bowl from Tesco for about £1. It's quite deep and holds loads of lather.

Currently i'm using a cereal bowl from Ikea. I think it cost about 70p or something silly like that. However, i have recently won an old Old Spice mug from Ebay, which i'm looking forward to using when it arrives.
The cereal bowl works great, i just wanted something with a handle that was a little more "old-skool."
All the best,
Jim.
Sainsbury cereal bowl.
I may be wrong - it's never happened before but it's possible.
Oh, here's a tip for anyone looking. I went to Laura Ashley a little while ago (my mother was in town with me, so I was just walking with her) and they have coffee mugs which are like ceereal bowls with handles in a way. Really great for lathering.
Here's a pic: http://www.lauraashley.com/invt/3358001&bklist= They are really big in real, and ideal for lathering.
