What's new

Love @ First Sight - New 4k & 8k

I think I found their 1k on a quick google search for like 24$.. Not bad if it's the right stone!

Green box? If so - I don't think that's the same series/stone. The box for the 1k I'm inquiring about is dark, maybe blue/purple or something like that, has large Kanji on it I think. Stupidly, I deleted the text - doesn't matter though; I'll be finding out what the deal is soon enough.
Not that I need a 1k, but I might get it anyway.

Need to find out more first though.

Do post a pic of the 1k box, if and when you come across it, and if it's from the same series. That's some serious chocolate!

Got some info tonight; complicated marketing jazz from our friends at Naniwa.

The green boxed stones and the ones I have are in the same series, sorta - but the name of the series isn't Gouken.
They're all called 'deluxe' stones, but that's not the name of the series either. And - the 4/8k stones are a different type than the ones in the green boxes. There are two other stones, one of which is the 1k I mentioned; it is also part of the series and also different than the green boxed stones.
I'll probably get a hands-on report about the 1k next week.

Ok - so after a buncha blades, I still like these stones a lot.

The 4k Hayabusa will not be replacing the 3k Chosera though. It's way finer, and the 3k C knocks out the post-1k refinement in a way that I prefer. Basically - the 4k H is more like what the 5k Chosera wants to be when it grows up. I think it's finer than the 5k C but I'd need to do a side-by-side to judge and I sold that Chosera a long while ago.
It's a prefect setup stone for the 8k Fuji. The polish is incredible. It cuts - but not like the 3k C. The scratch pattern is waaaaay finer, more consistent, and the mirror on the bevel is astounding.

The 8k Fuji is sterling - absolutely sterling. Harder than the Jyunpaku, seemingly finer and more consistent.
It can easily replace the SW but it's not going to. I love that stone and I'll keep it, plus it's sort of a mild 8k and certain razors really love that stone a lot. Dunno if mild is the right word - but, well - I know what I mean. Lol.

The info from the dealer supports my findings for consistency in the scratch patterns and more was shared also, but it's all hearsay and I'll leave it alone for now. If I get motivated I may contact Naniwa to find out more but that has never ever worked for me - so maybe I'll just be happy with what I know from using them.

The jump from the 1k C to the 4k H is doable but it's not how I like to do things. If Naniwa made a 2k in a similar fashion to these two new stones, I'd be in 7th heaven.

Both stones, the Fuji and the Hayabusa, are relatively new - they were first released around 10/2013.

I shaved off the 4k and it was suprisingly doable. Not a killer shave, but pretty impressive for a stone rated 4k.
I have not shaved off the 8k yet - every time I get a blade to that point I've done a comparison to Jyunpaku and then I set the edge back and start over. I have a blade on my bench now, taken as far as I can on the 8k F - if I can manage to not molest it with a Jnat I'll try to shave with it tomorrow. It's going to be difficult for me to leave it alone though - the bevel is screaming to be final-finished on my big Ozuku.
Ahhh.. sooner or later I'll get to shaving off it.

I'm still waiting for info on the Gouken 1k Professional stone. I might get an email or text in a day or two.

I feel like sheldon cooper is trying to explain quantum physics to me, trying to understand all that but it's going straight over my head.. makes me realise how specialised some people are in different fields.

This thread just goes to show that there are plenty of quality stones out there. No one needs them all, and a lot of fine combinations exist for pursuing that elusive perfect edge. Too many guys seem to obsess on the "my chocera is better than my jyunpaku but not as good as my Shapton and almost as good as my gokumyo" syndrome. They're all just tools - no magic going on. A good stone can give a good edge. I have what I have because I wanted to buy them at the time.

Figured - Judging by the layout, I had it pegged as a lower grit than the 220 GS.
I'm also guessing you sharpen knives with it.
If that is really Kongo-do, then I can't imagine what it would do to a razor.
My 180x is Alundum, and even that still shreds bevels like they're confetti.

Good guess. In fact, it's really only used for cheap cleavers, and once saw some action filinf down some PVC pipe for my sprinkler.

If you ever have a flood in your basement, I can lend it to you. It will suck up two feet of water in seconds.

For razors, I've pretty much settled on a simple 1K GS to coti routine.
