Safety Razor of the Month, October 2013 - Frankenrazors

It's that time of year again, boys and girls of B&B. Time to roll out the sacrilegious conglomerations of bits and bobs that you keep chained in your basements. Show us the monstrous assemblage of mismatched parts that your madness has sparked life into, for October is the month of...

The Frankenrazor

Probably one of our more commonly seen Frankenrazors on the 'bay is the fat handle from a Tech used with a NEW head. Handle switching is not a modern thing, I'm sure many of these were made up years ago when the owner of a NEW became frustrated with his cracked ball-end handle.

I love this one and use it often, its original plating is still fairly nice (with a patina).

I'm not sure if it's technically a Frankenrazor, but I saw this on Ebay sometime ago and something just ain't right:

I saw that one too! It was totally bizarre... like a flare-tipped Rocket handle with a Tech head. I wonder if it was some sort of bodge job out of old parts, or if some maker somewhere copied the Rocket styling for a three-piece handle. :confused1

Hey, I'll bet you guys didn't know that Edwin Jagger made a slant. Heck, I'll bet Edwin Jagger didn't know they made one.

This was my shave this morning, a Merkur-made slant head from my Pomco vibrating slant on an Edwin Jagger barley chrome handle:

I was wondering if it might have been a mock-up for product testing. It's got a Tech head, so it's not a foreign imitation.

Forgot to take a picture, but this morning's shave was accomplished with a nickel-replated Fat handled Tech handle and an Old Type head.

Stunningly efficient.

My floral ABC handle really lends itself to horrible combinations. Then, a B&B member who had bought a Gillette Monobloc in the "wrong" case had triggered my curiosity for what can be made, so I walked over to the bathroom, hoping for some frankenspiration...

After a couple of seconds I came up with the following frankenset:

$20131018_144002_resized.jpgLove the shave that I get from this NEW I would love to find another NEW head only for sale but still have to make a few more posts before I can go looking. Until then this one coupled with a tech for clean up is great. It works similar to an adjustable 7-3 shave. love it!

A pre war Tech head on an unidentified handle. Even the member I bought it from here, can't identify what handle it might be. Any help from you FrankenFreaks would be appreciated. It works great on this Tech and on my Merkur:

My Frankenrazor drank of the blood today!

Saturday's shave was a little rushed so I got away with a 2 pass shave with the Old type head, tech fat handle.
One WTG, one ATG on cheek, XTG on neck.

Results were surprisingly good, so I did what every responsible owner of a monster pet does. I pushed it.

Third shave on the Personna lab, WTG fine, ATG on cheeks fine, then "Hey, lets try ATG on neck".
Under the chin was where the monster's thirst was quenched. It drank, and it drank deep.

I'll tell this round the next campfire....

I have been "Frankenrazoring" for quite a while now. I have several heads I really like, but vintage Gillette handles just don't work for me. Too thin and too short. For me a handle has to be at least 3 1/2 inches long, or about 90mm. 4" is my preferred length. I have been using a Cadet handle with my NEW LC head. I just acquired a NEW SC, a NEW Standard Tuckaway, a Goodwill and I have an English NEW LC in the works too. I am slowly working my way through all of the "NEW" variations of heads.

I also just acquired a Weber Classic handle to use with these heads. It doesn't fit any of my modern razors but it perfectly fits all of my Gillette's. I'll take some pics in a little while and post them up. Once I find my perfect NEW head it will be off to be replated in Rhodium.

I never thought I would be a Frankenrazor guy. I like things that match. Things that were meant to go together. Things that are sleek and sexy, well built. But I tell you, I have never had better shaves than the new's I have with a different handle. Life has a funny way of taking you where IT wants you to go.

Picked up this little beasty in a group of razors I bought recently. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks interesting, and it's perfectly solid and straight.

Ok, here are the 3 Frankenrazors I am currently using. By far I have used the Cadet handle the most and usually put whatever head I want to use on it. The Weber feels great and I am going to use it tomorrow morning with one of these heads...haven't decided which one yet. From left to right we have:

NEW Standard Tuckaway Head on a Weber Classic Handle
NEW LC Head on a Muhle White Resin Handle
NEW SC Head on a Cadet 4" Brass/Black Carved Handle

I love that Cadet handle, was thinking about picking it up this week. Great idea to use with old heads.

The Cadet handle really is the best handle I have. I don't care for short handles. I wanted that handle in all Silver, but they only make it in 3", so I compromised and got the Black/Brass in 4". It's really nice and heavy and well built. I love the weight of the Weber handle, but it's thinner than I had imagined. If it was as thick as the other two, it would be my favorite.

For $20, you can't beat the Cadet. The OC head isn't too bad either. A bit aggressive though....
