For some people, DE razors are a brand new concept.

You are right Mark... my first razor was a Superspeed back in the early 60'. I forget that net everyone is not an oldie like me and that lots of folks have never seen a DE razor of any kind.

Fellow wet shaving aficionados! This DE razor ad by Rick Harrison is going be positive for the wet shaving market. Why? When Gillette came out with the Trac II (The first cartridge razor) the DE market has gone into obscurity. Only a fraction of the world's population still uses DE razors. While there has been a small resurgence in wet shaving here in North America, if "we" (The DE shaving community) don't see a substantial increase in DE shaving within the next 20 years or so, then I'm afraid the razor blade manufactures will stop the production of the blades. The only other factor keeping the production of DE blades alive is 3rd world countries (China, India, Russia, South America, etc, etc...). But that market for manufactures is dwindling as well. Those countries are already starting to convert to carts in droves. For the Micro Touch One safety razor itself, I know it's a piece rubbish. In my opinion, it's a glorified Weishi that's overpriced at $33. On the bright side, at least this ad is going to entice millions to give the Micro Touch One a try, thus converting millions of new DE shavers as well. Even if only, lets say 10% of the customers stick with the razor long term, that's still a lot of converted wet shavers. Imagine adding tens of millions of new shavers to the market. That could create a new DE market that could be robust. Besides, if they like this style of shaving, they'll upgrade to better razors, say an Edwin Jagger, Merkur, or a Muhle, and buy more wet shaving accessories also. Folks! "The movement" has to start from somewhere. Peace!

IMO it's a double-edged swo---er razor. It cuts both ways. (Hmmm any more bad cliches I can think of quickly? No. Let's move on.)

There are some who think that any publicity is good publicity. I'm not necessarily of that opinion. But I believe it is possible this could be good for DE shaving down the line...or it could be a complete disaster. I am assuming (and many others are as well, I think) this razor is a probably complete pile of dung and is wildly over-priced. If people fork over the $30 for this $5 razor and proceed to get terrible shaves (as I suspect many will) the door to ever switching to DE could be permanently closed for them---and to others who hear/read their complaints. In the long run, I think that doesn't help the DE market one bit--and actually helps to keep some who might otherwise switch at bay.

OTOH, if this razor is a big financial success for the marketers, perhaps others get in the act (with a better product) and then there isn't just one choice (available on TV where much of the public still gets there info about products) but several. Having multiple razors available could very well be great for the DE business, if some are of reasonable quality.

Now I realize I could be totally off-base and there is a chance this razor isn't a total pile of crap. I remain suspicious as I have yet to see a legitimate review of it anywhere. But it Mantic, and some of the others who have ordered it, say it's of reasonable shaving quality, then I will stand corrected. IMO, it doesn't have to be the best bang for the buck available. I have defended AOS as they deal in decent quality (although at a high price) and bring DE shaving directly to the public in their retail stores. If this razor is of decent quality (even if it is overpriced by a few bucks) I will have to give them that same respect.

    No kidding.

But for $10 (plus S&H) and 30 "Japanese precision blades!" (plus more S&H) this probably ran about $22 bucks or so, total, this seems like it was a better deal than the Micro Touch. I have to think the blades were better than the Dorcos included with the MicroTouch. But from what I can tell from a quick Google search, this went nowhere. Of course, I don't think they had as much exposure as the Micro Touch currently has. And of course, they had no annoying spokesman/woman.

Plus Jennifer picked the Akira side!

I like Rick and Pawn Stars and all but, I'm under the impression that the micro touch is as poor quality as my 12 dollar shaving factor DE. I hope the prices of blades don't go up if there is an influx of new shavers to the game.

Boy! Where did the "barber" in that video learn to use a straight razor? I'm a DE man myself, but I have always heard that a 90 degree angle is perfect for a SR.

I hope this brings more back into DE shaving.

We need strong demand for products to keep production flowing and product available.

The strongest demand will come from new customers who tell others who then become new customers

Have not seen this one yet. Makes some of the same points as the Rick vid.

I especially love the way he loaded the DE blade and used all that pressure We really need to grab these new wet shavers so we can learn them right!

That razor looks like much better quality than the Micro Touch One razor does.

My thoughts exactly. Looks like a better razor, probably better blades (and more of them) and less expensive. Yet it was a flop (probably due to reasons unrelated to price/quality.)

Wouldn't something like the Feather Popular be a good choice for the average guy looking to try a DE without all the hoopla we love here (seeking out antique Gillettes, for example)? I have never used one, but I hear it is a mild shaver, looks pretty good (in pictures, anyway) and since it is a Feather, I assume it is of decent quality. It only costs about $20. There are other examples of even less expensive razors that seem to be of decent quality without all the "As Seen on TV" rubbish (extra S&H for example) that comes with stuff from infomercials.

Maybe (but I fear unlikely) people who see the MicroTouch commercial and are intrigued will do a bit of research first and make a safer decision for their first foray into DE shaving.

    I was afraid of such.
I have personally been inside the "Gold & Silver Pawn Shop" in Vegas. I don't make a habit of going to pawn shops to buy or sell or pawn. But, because of the "Pawn Stars" TV series, I wanted to meet Chum, Pops & the gang. They were all out that day but the employees said they were very nice about having pictures with patrons and signing them.....

No offense to the die hard viewers of the "Pawn Stars" TV series - I watch it a lot myself, but:

My personal observations while inside the "Gold & Silver Pawn Shop":

I didn't notice anyone with a rare Colt revolver, etc trying to sell it ....It seemed pretty much built on the same premiss as any other pawn shop (but built in the city of lights)- provide quick pawn cash for someone down on their luck at the Casinos...at an exorbitant pick up fee, IMO. ( That's not meant to sound like Rick is bad, its just the way it is...they have to sell the stuff if the people don't pick it up so there is a risk factor...)

It seemed to me that many of the people that I observed there, were like me, there out of curiosity - or trying to hock their jewelry to get back to the Casinos so they could lose again and come back for more...

I personally refer B&B thru other web venues every chance that I can..I would challenge all other members to do the same in any blog or social network that they may belong to - as I feel our members are much more qualified to get the word out properly about vintage shaving. If you want to thank someone, thank Joel and the founding members of Badger and Blade...they are the patron saints of vintage razor resurrection....
Just my 2 ½ cents worth
