What's new

early Gillette catalog 1905

Ughhh none of my search terms ever brought that up, That went cheap. In the early Gillette ads I think this is the booklet information they would send out by request. Amazing piece. First Gillette ad below.

Neither did it pop up in my searches, probably because of the category it was listed in. Hmmm, time to refine my searches I think. On the other hand, I do think it has been won by one of ours. Let's hope he checks in with his score once he's received it!

The envelope is addressed to Mr Lindsay Davis, Guildford NC. I wonder if that is any relation to this Lindsay Davis - Lindsay Davis Jnr, father of Lindsay Davis III?

Searching Lindsay Davis and Guildford NC this was all that came up.

I saw that when it was first listed and was still at $10. I would've loved to pick it up. Read through every page on the pictures though. Very very cool.

Could be, but both Lindsay and Davis are very common names for that region.

Picture 3 shows a printing credit for Franklin printers in Chicago even though mailed from Boston. Based on the early 1903 ads and mailed requests to be sent to Chicago back then I think these were done by Townshend and sent to Boston. I don't think this was the first original printing because the cases are the later double ring cases and thinner ribbons. A 1903 booklet could have the tin or the cases that open directly in the middle (lid and base the same size) and a fatter ribbon. This is such a cool thing to have. grrrrrrrr I want it.

Davis was born in 1942, the booklet was mailed in 1905, that would make his dad age in the mid 30's.

LOL - sometimes Google can only help so much!

If the booklet was posted in 1905 to somebody who was, say, 20 he would have been 57 in 1942 - not impossible but older than most fathers.

Given the maths and the comment about maybe that path doesn't lead anywhere.

I read the thread before looking at the Ebay posting. I have to say that I was surprised at the realized price and the speed at which the price jumped in only 5 bids. Is this a good price for these items or did the bidders bid them up higher than they would be appraised for?

Here are pics from the ended auction...

You could do it in the dark anywhere.
You contribute no skill;
you use no ingenuity;
you do no part of the work whatever.
It's as easy to you as sliding down a greased pole.

Great piece of early 20th century poetry, even if maybe a bit ahead of its time! :ouch1:

Great find BTW. Thank you tictoc, for sharing!

That is an awesome piece of Gillette history!!
Those guys in 1905 were just so cool, shaving in the dark takes no skill and while wearing a suit!
I cant even shave in a t-shirt without getting it soaked :biggrin1:

"Sixty-two shaves to one blade!" Ah, for the days before truth in advertising laws.

Maybe so many of us missed this because of a problem with ebay search? One of my saved searches should have matched it, but I do not recall seeing it. As of yesterday it did not show up under "completed listings" either: I was only able to locate it by item id. But today the exact same searches work properly. Normally I would suspect user error, but in this case I think ebay had a problem. Clearly at least four users found it. But ebay probably has multiple copies of their search indexes, so some users would see it and some would not.

Well, no one said auctions were fair. Anyway the seller should be happy enough with the final price.

Even though my math sucked, that is what i was leading to...the age factor for those times and fatherhood most likely deducts that particular Davis.
