    Default Old Type Big Fellow

Psyched about my latest addition: an Old Type Big Fellow. I am particulary excited about the condition of the wooden box.

A little help with dating. The ring on the handle states Pat. Jan 30, 1920 and on the blade guard 317694A

    Here are some pics:

The date code is that of 1921.
The pat date on the handle is just that, the pat date.
So there is the box,(nice) let's see the razor.

Oh heck ya you can shave it.

Give it a good cleaning, polishing and sterilizing then give it a go.

This head holds the new modern blades nicely with no need to shim.

I really enjoy the shave I get from my Big Fellow.

Btw. Not an old type. That is a New Improved or New Standard. Meaning, as noted above, that it will give you great shaves with modern blades. As opposed to the old type, which was made for old school thick blades.

Give that thing a little polish, and it should be REALLY nice.

Mo's right on the ID, excellent score. I don't think I've ever seen a Big Fellow wooden box in such pristine condition. Love to see a pic of that razor cleaned up.

    Two questions:

ThirdI....how do you determine the date? From the serial number? The date code does not seem to correspond to the tables I am referencing. What am I missing?

Also, this razor and case looks for all the world like the one Krumholz shows on page 143 of the Collector's Handbook. Lists it as an Old Type Big Fellow. Not that Krumholz can't be wrong, but what differentiates the two? Old Type and New Improved, that is?

I find this website very useful for comparing old razors. I'm sure there are mistakes, but it helps when checking boxes against razors.

Lovely box by the way, excellent condition.

That's a beautiful looking razor - the box is, as you say, a veritable treat, too. An excellent discovery!

It gives all. Here you see:

    1921 Big Fellow New Improved (518095 A)
    1920 Big Fellow Old Type (N 22902)
    1928 Big Fellow New Improved (20284 C)
1930 Big Fellow NEW or Big Boy (59513)

The serial number you are refering to is also a date code.
Look in Krumholz's book and you will find them listed in groups.

Also yours is a New Improved, look more closely at the head, there is some milling done to it. The old types were flat.

    Like Achim shows...1921- New Improved
