What's new

looking for a sword maker

Mmmm, that's good staff work! There's something special about purpose-built, professional equipment.

$17.95. That is the real deal, not a Klingon-looking ritual blade from some Conan the Barbarian knife shop two blocks from the main gate of a military base, between a comic book store and a strip club, with half the customers 19yo kids whose speech is sprinkled with "Duuuuude, that's SICK!" or "Way Kewl!". This is no pretend you are tarzan machete. This is the real thing. Men work, and yes, even fight with these things, in faraway places where folks sleep in hammocks and a warm beer is something of a luxury.

You also need a file, for sharpening. Simply draw the file down the edge a few times, flip the blade and hit the other side. Again and again until you have a bevel, as evidenced by a burr you can feel on the opposite side after doing either side. Then alternate light single strokes on each side until the burr is gone. Wa-lah. Sharp machete. Only sharpen the last 40% of the blade cause that is all you use. It will take a while to set the initial bevel on a new machete. After that, it is just a few strokes as needed, to refresh the edge. Recommended file is a 10" Nicholson mill bastard, made in USA, not one of the imports. It will last a good while, and when you finally wear it out, it will make a nice straight razor or knife.

Machete steel is fairly soft and will not hold a sharp edge at a very small bevel angle. For a keener edge, do use a small bevel, but then increase the angle at the finish, for a compound bevel. Cutting grass or light brush, a thinner bevel. Heavy brush, small trees, etc, a heavier bevel.

Men who swing a machete every day for a living don't mess with no compound bevel. They keep a well oiled file with them and sharpen as needed, typically every smoke break. A brass bristle brush is useful for unloading the file. It will otherwise clog up with steel cuttings and will feel dull, and won't cut very aggressively.

When a machete is worn down to almost nothing at the end 1/3, cut it down into a kitchen knife. Great veg chopper, fish head chopper-offer, coconut chipper, etc.

Well Bruce, he was using a Webley Mark VI at one point, a Hi-Power, a 1911 and a S&W Third Model Hand Ejector (and those three were all in the same firefight.....)

I'm well aware of the subtle nuances. I am a member of an Indiana Jones forum.
