What's new

looking for a sword maker

I have been mulling this over for a while. I am a BIG Indiana Jones fan & something that I always wanted was a functional Temple of Doom machete. The one he uses to cut the rope bridge. I have all the specs & pics. It's just not something that I can make. The handle is realitivly detailed, but again, I have pics.

Any help you can give me is appreciated.

Thanx!!!
Charlie

Well, first off, are you prepared for what a custom machete or short sword may cost? I'm not enitrely familiar with that tool, so post a picture up and I might be able to direct you to a few makers who are capable of such things.

Bruce what exactly are you looking for? Do you have pictures you could post? If I cannot help I should be able to point you to someone who can.

Don Fogg is a fantastic knife and sword maker. I only wish I could afford some of his work. http://www.dfoggknives.com/

So is David Broadwell. http://www.broadwellstudios.com/

David does pens too FYI.

Welcome to the wonderful world of swords, Albion Swords will regularly set you back a few thousand dollars (US). The Swamp Rat Waki which I think originally sold for around $200 is regularly selling on eBay for several hundred dollars.

Talk to Robert Garner at rgblades.com. I have seen this guy's work up close. He is very, very good. Not crazy expensive either

$17.95. That is the real deal, not a Klingon-looking ritual blade from some Conan the Barbarian knife shop two blocks from the main gate of a military base, between a comic book store and a strip club, with half the customers 19yo kids whose speech is sprinkled with "Duuuuude, that's SICK!" or "Way Kewl!". This is no pretend you are tarzan machete. This is the real thing. Men work, and yes, even fight with these things, in faraway places where folks sleep in hammocks and a warm beer is something of a luxury.

You also need a file, for sharpening. Simply draw the file down the edge a few times, flip the blade and hit the other side. Again and again until you have a bevel, as evidenced by a burr you can feel on the opposite side after doing either side. Then alternate light single strokes on each side until the burr is gone. Wa-lah. Sharp machete. Only sharpen the last 40% of the blade cause that is all you use. It will take a while to set the initial bevel on a new machete. After that, it is just a few strokes as needed, to refresh the edge. Recommended file is a 10" Nicholson mill bastard, made in USA, not one of the imports. It will last a good while, and when you finally wear it out, it will make a nice straight razor or knife.

Machete steel is fairly soft and will not hold a sharp edge at a very small bevel angle. For a keener edge, do use a small bevel, but then increase the angle at the finish, for a compound bevel. Cutting grass or light brush, a thinner bevel. Heavy brush, small trees, etc, a heavier bevel.

Men who swing a machete every day for a living don't mess with no compound bevel. They keep a well oiled file with them and sharpen as needed, typically every smoke break. A brass bristle brush is useful for unloading the file. It will otherwise clog up with steel cuttings and will feel dull, and won't cut very aggressively.

When a machete is worn down to almost nothing at the end 1/3, cut it down into a kitchen knife. Great veg chopper, fish head chopper-offer, coconut chipper, etc.

Oh, bushman-cool calls for a leather scabbard. Not some buffalo bill looking thing with fringes and tassles, but a dark bullhide job with an iron hoop holding the top open, made in Guatemala or Honduras or the like. More often, it is tied over the shoulder and hangs under the weak side arm, not tied around the waist. There are local variations on this. When in the Petén, do as the Petéños, to paraphrase.

Hey Charlie!

I can't help you with the machete, but have you ever seen this?

This is THE company is England who originally designed and created all the Indiana Jones leather jackets. They still make them custom order and they are the best you can get. I almost did this once, but I decided I couldn't afford it and was too damn fat to do the jacket justice :biggrin1:

As a big fan, I thought you might appreciate that!

I actually have two Westeds & Tony Nowak. I have the entire outfit, including two Adventurebilt fedoras & a Penman fedora. I also have a bullwhip.

Always great to see other people who are into Indy as much as I am. The only gear I really have are a few bullwhips. I'm getting a hat soon though.

The jacket is kind of neat. I have a custom hat made just for my head and my specs by Peters Brothers Hats in Fort Worth Texas. Went in, had my head measured and then discussed what kind of hat I wanted. Settled on 50% rabbit and 50% beaver. Said I wanted sort of a Raiders size crown with a Crystal Skull pinch, and a Raiders sized brim. They did a really good job and even did a pretty good match job on the ribbon which is really hard. I think I paid near $400 for it. I don't remember really.

I don't do the entire Indy get up, at least not on purpose but in the fall I usually go with khakis and a polo with this hat and jeans and a button shirt and will only sometimes dress up a bit to go with the hat.

Good luck with the machete.
