Hey guys, I am working on a shaving product and am curious. I have been face lathering the first pass and then get my scuttle going for the next pass so I am curious if you do a bit of both, one or the other and if you have changed from one to the other. I will consider hand lathering like face meaning no bowl or scuttle.

I do both, but not during the same shave. I'll either bowl lather (with a scuttle), or face lather, depending on mood, or if I'm using a stick, etc.

I only face lather. The exception would be when I try a new product that I'm not sure about. I will bowl lather with it a few times.

I mostly face lather now, but occasionally will use a bowl. I used to be bowl only, converted about two months ago.

Face lather with hard soaps
Face lather with shave sticks
Face lather with creams
Face Super stick lather (shave stick + soap or cream)

Bowl lather with hard soaps
Bowl lather with creams
Bowl Super lather (soaps + cream)
Bowl Uber lather (soaps + creams + glycerin)

Use normal ceramic and stainless bowls for cold water shaving and scuttles (brush and lather) for warm water shaving.

While i understand why you consider hand lathering in the same category as face lathering (because there is no equipment). I actually think hand lathering is more like bowl lathering than face lathering. In bowl, scuttle or hand lathering you build the lather somewhere else and then put it on your face. Face latherers build the lather right on their face.

While I use a bit of both, from time to time, I consider myself a face latherer. The first lather is always built directly on my face. Even if I decide to go to a bowl (or mug in my case) it is just to quickly mix a few items together. I never work the brush in the mug long enough to make lather porn. I mix it a bit in the mug, and then finish building the lather directly on my face.

Once recently I got too much water in the mug so had to add more product. That one time I really whipped up some lather porn and the resulting product was much wetter than what I typically use. It worked fine. Very nice. But not as practical as straight face lathering for me--which works great, too.

I think face and hand lathering are more similar because you get instant feed back on the hydration level of your lather. Too much water, not enough, etc. In the bowl it is tougher. But yes I ask because of an equipment idea.

I typically bowl lather, but I'm thinking about switching to face lathering. I don't use a separate bowl for lathering, I just go to town on the soap until I've got good lather on the brush. It works and it's fairly clean, but I'm probably wasting a ton of soap.

I mostly bowl lather but I do face lather when I travel.

This has been my practice, but I'm off to Ireland soon for 13 days and believe I'm going to "bowl" lather in my empty Simpson's tub. I find using my face as the bowl mostly unsatisfying. The new Kent Synthetic is small enough to work in the tub.

I have a nice scuttle, but seldom use it, face lather almost always.

...I have a Becker scuttle, but I'm a 90% face latherer & 10% scuttle user!

I am a proud member of the The Official Face Latherers Club - United (TOFLAC-U). I have only the vaguest idea what a scuttle is ...
