Medicine cabinet blade slot

this is cool and i do wish i had one. but i just discovered that DE blade holders have a bottom holder for used blade..:)

I'm sure somebody's used it before so if they don't get cut on your razor blades they'll get cut on someone else's.

I could probably go with that logic but it still leaves me with not knowing if there are wires behind there.

I have an electrical outlet very close to the side of the cabinet that is definitely more recent than the cabinet so I have no idea if those wires are clearly safe from falling blades.

I just had a discussion with SWMBO about this. Our house was built in the 1920s and still has an old medicine cabinet. I'm going to put it to good use now.

I live in a really old apartment and the medicine cabinet doesn't have a slot in the back but, it has this little box mounted to the inside of the cabinet for razor blade disposal. Probably a step up from the wall deposit method so that you don't get them piling up in there. I used to wonder what it was for until I started wet shaving, then it made sense!

I did a search on 'razor blade banks' and a company called West Coast Shaving sells them for a dollar each.

Yeah, I remember having medicine cabinets with a razor blade disposal slot in the back. Haven't seen one in a while, though. the next time I'm at Lowes I'll have to check just for grins. :w00t:

Didn't the Gillette and Gem blade dispensers both have a "back side" to hold the used blades as you emptied the dispenser?

I know I ignored the slot, myself, until one day I was in a builders' supply and opened a particularly nice bathroom cabinet they had for sale there, and there was a paper label taped below the slot with "Used razor blade disposal slot" neatly printed on it, and I had one of those slap myself on the forehead moments.

I went down the row of cabinets they had there, and all of them had the slot (mid-1960s), although the labeling varied. Only one had a long-term notice that looked like a decal stuck in place.

]In my being a newbie to classic shaving culture, and this website, I discovered that the medicine cabinet in my old apartment building (built in the 40's) has a blade slot. Just learned about what that is about five minutes ago in this "Shave Den Photos" thread. It's cool because that is where my razors are stored and displayed.

Makes me want to leave some of my blades in the wall before I move out of here. I think I will.[/B][/COLOR]

I don't have a slot in my cabinet but it was an easy fix. I smashed a hole in the back wall with a hammer. Done!

How strange...just yesterday, I was thinking about back in the day, our bathroom medicine cabinets had razor blade slots in them. Now, you never see that anymore. Then I came across this thread. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who wonders about things like this.

If you want to deposit blades in a wall you can get a stainless db25 cover plate, router out a slot in a wall between some studs and fasten the cover over top of it using plastic drywall anchors and screws.

That DB25 cover plate is probably a better idea. I work in a Casino and the slits in those poker table toke drop covers are about 4 inches wide, probably a little excessive.

But I am lucky enough to have a slot in my cabinet, tho the wife has forbidden me from using it. But as they say, what she doesn't know....

..... 'til she drops one of her blades in the slot and here's the metal clink. Then when she says 'gotcha', you can say what you doing?

Besides the possible problems already mentioned, putting blades in the wall seems like a good way to grow mold in there.

Lived in houses my entire life with blade slots in the bathroom. Never had a mold issue in any of them.
The water vapor in the bathroom was much more severe on the human side of the wall from sinks and toilets and showers and baths than it was on that side from a slightly damp razor blade.
Many older bathrooms didn't consider the ventilation issue as is done in more modern houses.

I'm going to deposit a penny with every razor blade I drop in my medicine cabinet blade slot. Call it hazard pay for whoever has to clean them out one day.
