Brown Leaf Newbie Check-In & General Chat

This is the second time for me being a member. I was a member around 2009. Then had my email account hacked. So i had to start over from scratch. I grew up around a few pipe smokers and way to many cigarette smokers. I first started back in April 1997 and I haven't looked back. My first real purchase was 2 cigars since I won a food bet with a couple of my Army buddies. I then purchased my first Dr. Graibow pipe. It had a huge bowl. I smoked the hell out of it.

I then gave it to my dad as his pipe he had was ruined. He loved it. The next logical step was I got a Peterson pipe. I forgot what number it was but it was like a Sherlock Holmes style. It had one hell of a bowl. I then purchased another Peterson pipe for my dad. Then it went down hill from there. I would study my Molecular Biology and other science classes at the local B&M Cigar/pipe shop. I ended up and met Erik Nording. I really enjoyed his unstained pipes. He pulled out this special pipe line with animals on it. I looked through them and found one I loved. At the end, I had like 10 different pipes.

Unfortunately I had to give up pipe smoking back in May 2009. I traded them for Fuent Fuente Opus X cigars. Yes, I'm a certified Fuente whore. And I'm the one that stole Carlito's Secret Stash. Ok, I didn't steal his cigars since he gave them to me. Inside joke. I also have a 1200 stick humidor. Now I am supposed to give up cigar smoking due to 4 titanium screws. But that isn't happening. :w00t:

Welcome MrPeat. It sounds like you have had a roller coaster ride with pipes and cigars. Just to satisfy my own curiosity, why the change from pipes to cigars? I know, I know. Opus X are some stellar sticks. I have had my share. Just curious as to what swayed you one way and not both? The world is your tobacco oyster!

Also, what is the effect of smoking with titanium screws? Is there some kind of chemical reaction or something?

It is good to have you hear no matter what the circumstance.

I actually was doing both. Even in the Army. What caused me to stop smoking pipes is a complex answer. So the Cliff Notes version. I had Esophageal Cancer and Chronic Acid Reflux. Thus the teeth was damaged so I told the VA to just pull them since the Acid Reflux still wasn't under control. They reluctantly pulled them as the teeth could have been fixed. So the Specialist said I had to quit smoking pipes, but was fine with cigars.

Now for the second question. Nicotine can cause your body to reject any metal implant, at any given time, since it will be detected as a foreign object. One side effect is where the implant is pain. That is the Cliff Notes version as well.

And yes I've had one hell of a ride.

Wow. That is an understatement. Well I hope that you are doing well now and enjoying life. We are happy to have you here with us. I know you have a lot to contribute!

New here.
New in the forum.
New Leaf, I hope.
My favorite cigar thus far is Rocky Patel 1990. This was one of my first cigars given to me by my brother in law. The 1990 would be first. the second may be Alec Bradley Nico Puro.
Since I am new to this. I do have a question. What device do you use to measure your Rh in your humidor? The one that came with my box has failed. It is analog and stuck on 90% one I got with a pipe tobacco jar is battery operated and I am not sure if it is correct.

First of all, welcome to the BL!

In my experience, analog hygrometers are pretty much junk. Inconsistent, unreliable, not worth the effort. Get a digital one. They're not expensive, and it's money well spent to keep your cigar investment at the proper rH.

+1 to what Price said. Plus the digital hygrometers are easily calibrated and far more accurate!

Hey, New to B&B as this is my first day of posting. I have smoked cigars for about 30 years. Never was one to store them, first batch of about 30 got the beetles and had to toss them so now it is the occasional box or two, but more often now just as needed.

Romeo y Julieta are probably my favorite

Partagas (we used to smoke the 150 daily when they first came out only have a few left )

Hello all,

new to B&B - started getting into wet shaving and thought I'd research. Low and behold, I've found like minded individuals in all of my favorite hobbies - cigars included!

I tried my hand at pipes in college and much prefer cigars to the pipe.

My absolute favorites are Cuban Partagas Serie D No. 4. I get these during my annual visit to Toronto (my wife is Canadian).
Other cubans I like include Cuaba, El Rey del Mundo

For non-cuban, I'm currently enjoying Tatuaje and any of the Arturo Fuentes.

In any case, thought I'd say hello!

I still have not found the time to walk out back and just light up

One of these days I will ...so far removed from having a smoke a day...

(Edit: - and thanks for the welcome!)

I'm new to the Brown Leaf, but, have been smoking since 1997. I don't mind either cigars or pipes, however, I smoke cigars more than I do pipes generally due to convenience.

I don't have man favorites. Recently on my list has been the Flor Del Valle Warped SkyFlower and the The Oscar, which is the second coming of the Leaf by Oscar. Of course the standard LFD, Fuente, RP, Ligas. Partagas and Montecristos are on rotation, but, I like trying boutique brands. The humidor at the cigar shop I frequent has 1700 sq ft of cigars floor to ceiling.

I am not big on the Cubans. Had a few and didn't find them to be much better than those grown elsewhere. Man of the Cubans in the US are knockoffs so we really don't get the real thing often. I've been to cuba on business and they weren't any better than what we get in the states.

I am just a good old boy that likes a couple of sticks a day.

Hello! I enjoy a cigar from time to time and I have always thought about getting a pipe. However, after reading about it, the maintenance needed ends up being somewhat off-putting, as well as how broad the selection is (and I have no idea about the differences between blends). In addition, I'm not sure about the differences between actual pipes... I always thought about a bulldog one, but I really don't know that much about how they might (or might not) differ from one another.
