Default Hello all... new straight shaver here

Hi everyone, I'm honoured to be part of your group.

I'm 21 years old and straight shaving is new to me. I've wanted to get into it for the past year or so. I received an electric razor (a really nice one too) for Christmas and exchanged it for my first straight blade: a basic model Henckle.
Are these good razors? or at least good enough to start?

I tried using the razor once on my sideburn but failed. I've ordered the DVD from Classic Shaving and hopefully this will get me on my way. What's the chances that my new razor is going to need a hone before it is really "SHAVE READY".

    Cheers
    Dave

Welcome to the club. yes henckels are great razors however new razors are seldom shave ready. I would advise you to send your razor off to one of the honemeisters either here or at SRP so you will know what a truly shave ready razor feels like. Straight shaving is a learning experience and takes time to learn so go slow and don't rush it. Hopefully you at least got a strop with the razor, A straight must be stropped before each use and you need to know how to use it or you can dull the edge of the razor. I would wait for the DVD to come and view it before doing any further shaving.

    Welcome Dave,
I recently bought my first straight, an Henckels, and it was nowhere close to be shave ready! My swiss knife is sharper to be honest with you.

I sent it away to get honed and it came back really sharp. Now, I'm waiting for my strop to arrive in the mail and I'll give it a first try.

Good luck with the razor, I only read good reviews.

Cool. Great to know that I have a decent razor and people here who are willing to help me avoid an accidental self-decapitation. Now I'm excited!

    Cheers
