The landscape of the chessboard that is......Until a few weeks ago I'd never played a game of chess....Don't know how it escaped me all those years....Working on the place, hunting, fishing, and the horses and such I guess....The wife and I ordered a nice enough set to gain her consent to leave it out on the dining room table and have played at least 5 games a week since it arrived. As we are both learning together, the matchups are very interesting so far....The simple complexity of this game is a real fascination for me right now. Played one game earlier to stalemate(my mistake)and I barely won just a bit ago....Guess it's not just for geeks and snobs after all.....

Chess to me is like golf is to others: I really enjoy it, but I'm awful at it.

Chess is a lot of fun....I don't get to play nearly as often as I'd like anymore...

That's a terrific looking set and it's good to hear that you're enjoying it. Too many chess sets sit idle. I've loved the game since I was a child and even played variations on it including 3D Star Trek chess, 4 player chess (both of which require different boards) and a super fun addition called Knightmare Chess. If you want a laugh now and then you might consider picking it up.

Also interesting is a newer game called arimaa.

"Arimaa is a highly competitive strategy game. It was designed to be:

    Difficult for computers.
Playable with a standard chess set.
    Fun and interesting for humans."

My wife has a brother who thinks he's real good at chess. He was always bugging her to play. She got a book and memorized a strategy, took him up on his challenge, beat him, and never played him again. She scares me sometimes...

LOL, I had to read your post twice to see what this had to do with Newfoundland!!!!

Chess, is an easy game to play, but a wickedly hard game to play well (if that makes sense). Among other things, it's a game that can teach you a level of patience that many will never understand.

Don't feel intimidated. It's the hardest game in the world, after three cushion billiards.

There used to be a lot more codpieces in that game ...
