Default Newbie Wetshaver - Just got new razor

    Hello everyone,

I am a newbie to wet shaving, and decided to take the plunge and ordered a new Dovo "Micarta" SS 5/8. This is it:

Now what? Is this razor ready to go, or do i need to strop/hone it? I have my lather bowl and Taylor's shaving cream, and am just waiting to receive my badger brush.

Are Dovo razor's usually ready to shave out of the box?

    Thanks!

    Hello mate .

Most new straight razors need honing and indeed stropping prior to use .From what I gather you can request that the razor be made ''shave ready'' from the seller you have chosen ,this will of course cost you more.

Honing a razor is certainly something you need to think about learning for the future. For now though I would opt to have your new razor made shave ready by an expert ,this will allow you to enjoy and learn how to use it without the discomfort of razor burn. Also having the razor made shave ready by an expert gives you a bench mark ,after all how do you know what sharp is untill you have experienced sharp ?.

From what I have seen there are some guys on here that can make your razor ''shave ready''.

All the very best of luck

It'll definitely need to be honed. As stated, you can have Classic Shaving send it out to be honed, or you can send it out once you receive it.

I'd recommend you read Joel's Interactive Guide to Straight Razor Shaving,
which you will find at the top of the General Straight Razor page here at B&B.
It will give you the info you need to ask some more pointed questions and start making some decisions about stones and strops and stuff.

    Welcome Aboard,

    Graham
