Thread: My first setup

  1. Default My first setup

EJ DE89BA11 - 2 shaves in with my first DE razor and am absolutely in love.
    Tweezerman Face Destroyer
$3 Bed Bath and Beyond Bowl (4"x2") These are about a 1/2" taller than ones I see online specifically for shaving, and not as pretty, but it fits great in my hand and comes in 4 different colors. I bowl lather because of brush burn I get from the face destroyer, and really enjoy the concept.

    Hey Stephen,

Nice setup and great to see pics. The barley is a GREAT, effective razor and beautiful too. Don't sweat it on buying a proper scuttle...yet. Figure out whether you'll keep up the DE shaving and once you are really comfortable on your technique you can splash out. It's not inconceivable though that you stick with your current gear forever - but if you do, let the rest of us know how you did it

I spent LOTS last year on gear that I don't use anymore because I was chasing my ADs and believing that a better razor/brush/bowl etc would change my shaves. In hindsight I should have waited until later.

BTW: what soap/cream you using? What's your current routine?

Soak brush while showering in hot water, get out and dump bowl and shake brush a couple times. I'm using a AoS sampler that I picked up, so I drop a little bit of cream in the bottom of the bowl and work into a nice lather, dip the brush in water once and keep going. Lather seems to be pretty great, tried more water and I get a lather that looks pretty thick but has absolutely no substance to it. I paint the lather on, if I do much else with that brush I get irritated even before I shave. One WTG pass and one XTG pass, first two shaves were the best two shaves of my life. (and was mid week irritated already!) I must admit, I did spend quite a bit of time on here studying technique. I still had a weeper or two, and need to work on a couple areas on my neck and my chin but am greatly amazed by the DE already.

Next cream I will be shaving with is Trumpers, I try to only change one variable a week to really understand how each affects me. (had to break that rule when my 89 came in)

I'll get a scuttle eventually, but for a bowl what I have now is perfect and cheap, and I need to replace the face destroying brush ASAP!

    Thanks for the concern!

Great setup and great start! You are doing it right. Keep it going nice and slow and only change one thing at a time.

Looks good and should do the job. Good luck with it and take your time, going slow and easy as your technique develops.

I do believe that the bowl is too small after lathering with it for a couple days. It's difficult for me to really get into lathering with a bowl thats the size of my hand. I started bowl lathering with a bowl from my kitchen that is twice as big, and I might go back to something that size. Anyone else dislike lathering with small bowls?
