    Default What causes tugging?

I don't know if I am using the correct term or not. However, often with a fresh blade I get a "tugging" sensation where the blade will not glide. It just stops on the face, and I have to stop the stroke or risk cutting myself.

What is going on here and how do I get it to stop? Do I need to be using a preshave oil to make my face more slick? This never happened with Atras or M3s so I wonder if I am doing something wrong with my HD. I do use good creams -- Musgo, Floris, and TH Ultimate Comfort for example. So, no inferior products there.

And, the foregoing described "tugging" did not occur with either Merkur or Crystal blades. Only Feathers and Derbys.

    lack of intimacy

    but seriously, ladies and germs......
    howz about:
poor lather or old, dull blades?
    Thats where I would start.

Since your example involves a new blade, look at your prep and dont get all caught up in the 1000 levels of pre-products.
    I know. Believe me
    Try this:

    1. Hot towel treatment at sink
    2. rub "pre-lather" into your beard with your fingers and let it soak in for a cuppa minutes while you build your lather
    3. Perfect your technique. (take your time and pay attention to razor angle)

    Good luck

I am able to create lather with peaks like whipped cream. So, I don't think it is poor lather. And, I said "fresh" blades, meaning new blades -- not old dull ones. Accordingly, it isn't that.

Peaky lather is part of the criteria, it should also have very fine air bubbles (almost unbroken, shiny surface) and most importantly feel slick and substantial when you rub it between two fingers.

I get tugging sort of like that sometimes if I let my angle become too obtuse. Actually, when I am in a hurry, that is my most serious DE problem.

You didn't mention what blades you are using. I've found that just because a blade is new does not mean it's all that sharp.

All the above are good, if i rush and don't spend enough time on prep especially hot towel and lather then i get a tugging sensation.

The angle of the blade can be even more critical when it's at it's sharpest. And anything that you can do to soften the beard before the shave can only help.
