Thread: Food Trucks!

  1. #1

    Default Food Trucks!

I started a new job in downtown Washington DC. Every day at lunchtime there is an amazing array of food trucks parked about a block from my bldg. Korean fusion is ubiquitous as are Vietnamese offerings. We get different trucks each day. Yesterday the popular trucks were a gourmet pie truck (savory and sweet), a Korean taco truck and a contemporary American food truck. More than 15 trucks total at my location. I'm about to be poor, fat & happy!

Yea, food trucks have been quite the deal in metropolitan areas for quite a while. Food Network and the Cooking Channel have entire shows about them. The food truck industry is big on using Twitter to publicize their location on any given day.

Yep we even have them up here with a catch. They don't actually drive anywhere, they are licensed to be in one specific spot only. Buddy of mine owns one in N.S and he's trying to explain the concept of a truck to them.

Thank God for these food trucks. They fill a significant void in the area where I work. My favorite dish was a barbecued duck taco from a truck run by Jose Garces.

Yep, I've been living under a rock apparently
I don't do twitter, but found a great website with real-time tracking which also inlcudes the various truck tweets.

I assume these are far from the "roach coach" that would come by the construction site where I worked summers while in college!

Yes food trucks are popping up everywhere. I believe this this phenomenon has three facets: 1) the state of the economy, I imagine people want more value, better and quicker food for their dollar; 2) the world is becoming a smaller place, as the ethnic mosaic is becoming more diverse, so are peoples tastes to try new and different foods and 3) the food channels constant bombardment of all the new shows, exposing people to the delicious pleasures of the palate. In a sense food trucks bring the world to your door, conveniently and cheaply. I am from Montreal, Quebec, our city has a by-law prohibiting food trucks. However, as of late they are looking into removing the prohibition of food trucks, through licensing and regulation, as already done with restaurants. I believe that food trucks are a good thing and am looking forward to having them in my fair city. However, they must be properly regulated for hygiene purposes and so as to not further cannibalize the already fragile restaurant industry. A balance has to be struck between permanent restaurants and the capacity of food trucks to operate within city limits. In the mean time, I get my fill from "Eat Street", until the trucks arrive here. Happy Shaving and Eating. Sam.

Having just finished a couple of G&T's, I could go for a Fat Buddah at the Rutgers grease trucks about now. Sadly no designated driver to be found.

Portland has an absurd food cart infestation.

Go here (CLICK ME) and zoom in on the downtown area, so you can get an appreciation of how many there are in the area.

I'm assuming you mean in Hawaii? My favorite shrimp scampi is from one of those trucks on the north shore. I just drooled all over my keyboard.
