How could you just pick one?

    Jazz : Patricia Barber
    Country (f) : Alison Krauss
Country (m) : Johnny Cash. Or Steve Earle?
Rock (m) : Bruce Dickinson, or possibly Carl McCoy. Maybe Fish. Or Wayne Hussey. Can't decide.
    Rock (f) : Julianne Regan
Opera : Another vote for Maria Callas
    Completely Mad : Diamanda Galas

Amalia Rodrigues, I have no idea what she's singing but I sure like the way she sings it, just beautiful!

Right now I'm on a huge Etta James/ Otis Redding kick. I also think Roy Orbison has one of the greatest voices ever.

So many of my favorites on these lists, but one of my all time faves that I haven't seen yet is Judy Garland in her prime. Lots of covers of her songs, but no one sings Over the Rainbow or The Man That Got Away like she did.

    Great picks, gentlemen!

Can I add some contemporary voices?

Listen to Hank III, eerily similar to his grandad.

I'll throw in for Johnny Cash if we're talking gut wrenching honesty and pain exuded vocally.

hmmm, for me I will always remember Julio Iglesias and Luis Miguel. Both sang interpretations mainly of numerous genres in Spanish (and Julio also in English and Italian) from the 1930's to the 60's, , all love ballads, tangos, boleros, and sang with such power.
I also love Joan Baez, Laura Pausini (Italian), and Whitney Houston (her rendition of "Who could imagine a King" can still move me to tears)

I've been fortunate to see this guy in concert several times, he's one of those rare singers who sounds so much better live than on record

I've just started listening to Kelly Hogan's new disc. I'm not sure what I think of it yet, but her voice is amazing.

Good call on Karen Carpenter. I saw her on Long Island in 1971. I'm looking forward to seeing Deborah Harry in concert in a couple of weeks. Love Blondie!

I think that Francesco Di Giacomo of Banco needs a mention. I guess his style is that one either hates it or loves it. No one calls me BigM in real life....I chose it for a few reasons, one of which is that its the nickname for Mario Medious. Mario Medious, Big M, was the founder of Manticore Records and signed Banco to be distributed here within the States.

    one clip by Banco:
