Musgo Real cream

Had my first shave with Musgo Real this morning. It lathered great. Much better than the Proraso. I must admit I have used more soaps than creams but due to the fact that I seem to have an overwhelming case of aquisition disorder (not limited to soaps or creams) I ordered the Musgo. Good shave and I loved the scent. Definately what I would consider a "traditional" scent but today it fit the bill perfectly. I am somewhat surprised that I have not seen more posts related to this cream. Maybe I have just missed them. However, if you have not tried Musgo yet I would recomend that you give it a shot. I know I am far from gaining the status of a respected product reviewer (I'm still very green so to speak and I have yet to try the 3 T's) but it gave me a great shave this morning. Anyway, for a newbie looking to try something new, grab some Musgo and give it a shot.

There was a time when Musgo Real got more play on the forums than Proraso...seems to me even on the forums there are fads, and one month one cream will be "in" then a month later something else will be.
You'll get no arguments from me about Musgo Real. I am not sure which "version" I have (there are more than one-and one in particular has a bad reputation for gumming up brushes...but I haven't had this experience)
But I like it.

Musgo Real was the first cream I ever ordered. I didn't really know what I was doing at the time so didn't get great results from it. I've never tried it again, but probably should.

As John alluded to - the big - BIG problem with musgo is they seem to change their formula every few years, and a lot of their products seem to phase in and out. Some iterations of the Mugo Real cream were outstanding - others were awful to brushes, and then they even changed the scent added, then I think subtracted lanolin - etc etc. I think the reaosn it doesn't get more attention on the forum - is that it is hard to recommend - as since it changes so frequently - it'd be a shame to recommend it, speak highly of it, then have a poor SOB end up with one that coats their brush in gunk.

Although I found the scent very pleasant, and the lather rich and creamy, Musgo is not for me because it gave me an irritation all over my face.

Hi Jeff. Do you think it could be because of the lanolin? I know that some folks have a bad reaction to it. Happily I do not. I ask because I'm trying to find out if the Musgo in it's current incarnation actually does contain lanolin. Thanks my man.

Todd, I just got received a tube ordered from Sesto Senso today and the ingredients include lanolin. - Justin

Todd, I couldn't really say, maybe that's why, or maybe something else in it besides the lanolin, but I definitely must be allergic to it. It's too bad, because I heard a lot of good reviews about Musgo and I wanted to try it.

Hi Justin. This is good information. I'm positive the version I sampled did not have the lanolin. This would seem to indicate that maybe Musgo got tired of hearing all the complaints and changed it back to the more traditional lanolin formula. I certainly hope so as the hay/grass scented product is the one I want to try.

Jeff, indeed it may be something besides the lanolin that is irritating your skin. From what I can gather from soaping/toiletry forums, synthetic fragrance oils are the number one culprit in most cases of irritation. This does not leave all natural products off the list. Lanolin and peanut oil are two common ones. Thanks again for the feedback fellas.

I tossed the box as soon as I got it so I dont have the list of ingredients. It has a very pale green color and the bottom of the tube says Claus Porto. It does say that there is a base of Lanolin and Glycerine on the back of the tube. Dont know if that helps or not.

Actually all the changes took place years ago. It's no longer the cream it used to be but in it's current formulation it's closer to the original formula. What happened was Claus Porto used to produce this stuff in small batches. Then they got bought and this process was deemed too expensive. They moved to a formula that was kinder to the skin, did not contain menthol, contained natural oils and yet was mass producible at a reasonable profit. Well, the long time users complained and really that was the customer base, they didn't think the customer base was going to expand so they made another change back in the direction of the original formula. Lanolin is what was in the first and the latest versions that is charged with gumming up brushes. It was that second version that was the most skin friendly and did not contain lanolin.

The way you would know what versions you have would be as follows: the original version was a deep blue, the second and current versions are more aquamarine in color but the second version contained boric acid. The third and latest version is aquamarine and contains lanolin. You can still use this cream, but to avoid gumming up your brush just use it intermittently with soaps and other creams.
