    Default something different tonight...

i have been on a coti with oil and JNAT kick for a while... and i haven't shaved with anything other than coti/jnat edges for a while....

so tonight i got to thinking i needed a bit of a change... so's i broke out the ole translucent arkie and honed up my GOTTA... definitely different.... it was wicked sharp and gave me a great shave but it was quite a bit "harsher" than i have grown accustomed to...

definitely a "brassier" or "crisper" edge...

i am gonna take a couple shaves in a row with this edge then go back to coti-oil/JNAT edges....

then i may take a week with a thuri edge.... then possibly welsh slate or purple slate or dragon tongue....

    what a wonderful world....
a nice walk in the woods helps me relax and relieves tension....

the fact i'm dragging a shovel and a body should be irrelevant...

Coti+Jnat is my weapon of choice. Don't think I could go back to anything else.

my arsenal isn't extensive enough to do much experimenting LOL
But, I've had a few great shaves in a row now off 2 different blades I finished on the purple welsh slate (llyn mellynallylllynnn-something lol) followed by plain leather stropping only. More comfortable than my C12K edge anyway....I can only imagine what it must be like with someone who really knows what they're doing on the stones!

Stop making us drool with your collection of stones, you know you really dont need them all!
I'm currently loving my pimped GD that was honed on my purple welsh and finished on the welsh "turi" they too have wickedly sharp edges for me, hitting a 4 to 5 HHT after stropping. The edge is also less forgiving when I compare it to my coti edges and I end up with more weepers but that's probably also 90% my technique or lack thereof.

I tried that a while back. Now I only coti/JNAT edges for my personal use.

Arky's don't sharpen as fine as .25diamond (that's what you use on your coti, right?) or Jnats. They're around the range of a water coti finish as per my HHT, but seem a bit more effective in the shave. I don't sharpen on them often but I like doing a handful of zero pressure passes after a sharper edge (10k Sigma) to mow down some of the bevel peaks. Might be worth trying off your oiled coti. Go oiled coti then about 10 no pressure passes on the arky (Clean oil, no Diamonds) before hitting the strops. If your touch is light enough, the edge glides on the oil and I theorize that the high points of the scratch pattern catch on the stone and are shorn off, polishing the bevel rather than reducing the edge. The number of passes this takes varies razor to razor. Seems to fall 5-30 as the sweet spot for my razors. You'll notice in the shave (and HHT if you like them) when an Ark finish starts taking over. If that happens, do a few less passes on the arky next time.

So, for film users...ya get your jollies off of trying 3M film vs. Thor labs vs. Specialized.net films (or whatever brands they are? Being absolutely serious here. Can you tell a difference between a 1micron film from diff't companies? Diamond vs AlOx for same grit size? I'm aware of the various wet paper pico/Paco paper substrates, and I've used/enjoyed some of my own film edges, but I only have the one brand's progression.
Me to wife (truth!): "Does she really need all these Barbie dolls? You only need two to have a conversation. Why so many?"
Wife, not skipping a beat: "It's kinda like your straight razors..."
