Hello Everyone!
I was directed to B&B by a youtube member. I watched his videos on honing. I am a carpenter and fabricator so having someone else hone my blade is out of the question. Since I joined B&B I have found lots of useful information, and I am excited to take this journey towards the superior shave. My styptic pencil, and Fromm strop dressing have arrived. I am just waiting on my strop, Norton 1000x/4000x water stone, a 8000x gold water stone, and Dovo 5/8 Full Hollow with black handle.
Now I am beginning to look into my options for flattening my stones (thanks to B&B otherwise I wouldn't have known). I am interested in getting DMT to flatten, but I may just save that for the second time. Do abrasive papers or plate glass work just as well? Does paper grit makes a difference? I am in no rush by the way, I want to have everything right and proper before I begin the first shave.

Welcome to the community, George. I am currently using a Feather AC DX (non-folding) with changeable blades, so I have no insight in honing, stropping and stones. But good luck!

Hello Back! from the (blistering hot) Valley.
I am a newbie to wet-shaving; but I do sharpen kitchen knives with water stones, and I know a bit about flattening. The DMT XXC is one of the good-convenient (expensive) choices for flattening. If you want to go cheaper, papers won't do it; but drywall screen will. You'll want to put that on something flat as can be (tile or plate glass or whatever) and rub the soaked stone over that. It's a bit messier and less convenient than the DMT (or Atoma, or -- what would be my first choice -- the unnamed diamond plate from Japanese Knife Imports). Originally Posted by GeorgeyBoy

Thanks for the tip, ill try the screen first. I will probably do my flattening and honing in the garage so making a mess isn't an issue.
