Default My first humidor and some good cigars!

    Hey guys,

I have had a few fine cigars over the years. But I got the fever really bad a couple of months ago during my visit to a convention in Nashville when I had the exquisite pleasure of enjoying a Hoyo Dark Sumatra in the Mobile Cigar Lounge (an airstream camper turned into a five-star smoking lounge!)

I haven't been able to get that experience out of my head and I had the opportunity to visit my local cigar lounge. While there I picked up a Xikar 10 piece travel humidor. I loaded it up with a few famous characters like a Rocky Patel Decade, Fuente Rothschild Maduro, Padron and a nice big Kristoff.

I chose the travel humidor as I tend to enjoy my cigars most when I travel so it just made sense. Instead of using the built-in sponge, the fellows at the store recommended I use a Boveda humid-pack. They tell me it should last a couple of months, no worries. My biggest hurdle is finding the time and place to enjoy one of these cigars without annoying the heck out of my wife (she hates the smell!)

Being new to cigar smoking I certainly welcome your thoughts on my setup.

    Cheers!

Mom headed out this afternoon so me and my oldest daughter (19) each enjoyed a cigar on the patio. I had a wonderful Padron and she smoked a Fuente Rothschild Maduro. We both thoroughly loved it!

They set you up nicely man. On top of ShavingCreams.com we are also Cigar King and I can say I would have steered you to something exactly like that. The Boveda packs are awesome and last 2-3 months. Great product. You also got a nice collection to start with too!

Congrats on your setup! I've been using the Boveda packs for several years now and they work great. Last night I pulled out a Rocky Patel Signature I put in there in '09 and it was perfect. Also an outdoor smoker here.

Awesome Travel Humidor...and talk about 'bonding' with your daughter...priceless!!!

When I travel I also use a Travel Humidor, but mine is leather covered and lined with spanish cedar. It fits 12 'stogies' (I store mine in carona size tubes), plus I use 'Water Pillows' for humidification (just dip in distilled water for 15 seconds to activate), and my cigars are always A-OK.

Wow, your travel setup looks very nice. I like the price even better. I may have to pick up one of those.

I've found that using tubes greatly helps in protecting the cigars (and by removing the bands...you can hide your Cubans fom nosy customs officials...works like a charm), and this Humidor is small enough to fit in your carry on or 'checked' luggage.

Thanks for the tip about customs Christopher. I recently purchased a used Montecristo humidor with what I hope is a genuine Cohiba (but I am prepared to accept the loss if it's a fake) along with a bunch of other sticks. I am just getting into the wonderful world of cigars so I am definitely in learning mode.

Incidentally, one of the most interesting articles I ever read about cigars wasn't about cigars at all! The article was in an old issue of Zymurgy (a home brewers magazine) and detailed the writer's adventures visiting Havana and their official state brewery. He laid out a rich, colorful image of a society stuck decades in the past where families still gather on their front porches after dinner, cigars glowing in the evening dusk as the kids play on the street. I found that very appealing and nostalgic.

I'll post pics of the humidor w/sticks when it arrives. I think it should be here tomorrow.
