My first OC -- Old Type Frankenrazor

I snagged this little fellow on Ebay for a whopping $4 (with shipping!). There are still some great deals if you keep an eye out.





Until this bad boy came along, I had only used DEs with a safety bar. OC razors always looked too aggressive for me. But at $4, I couldn't go wrong. After my first shave with it, I was thoroughly impressed! Despite the ugly crack in the handle, it shaves wonderfully! It's smooth and very efficient. I think the bigger ball-end handle on this razor looks much cooler than the ball end on my Tech.

I'm all for some respectable patina, but the nickel is flaking off head and it doesn't match too well with the gold plating on the handle. I think it's time for the plating to go. I'm soaking it in vinegar to see if I can take it down to brass. Any idea how long it'll take while soaking?

The nickel open combs are kind of rare, while the brass open-comb ball-ends are quite common. If it were my razor, I'd leave it be.

If you want a new handle, you could probably find a ball end tech pretty cheap. It would be a decent match for this razor.
