Balancing scents

Gents, I'me about four months into wet shaving and enjoying it immensely. I tend to lean towards Italian products (thus far), including Cella, SMN, and Floid aftershave. I've been hesitant to use any cologne during these months because I'm not sure how these scents will balance out. If I use an aftershave splash (like Floid Original or Blue), do I need to go on a search to find out if a particular fragrance will work with it? I guess what I'm saying is, do you use both a splash and a fragrance, or just one or the other...and if you use both, do you try and pair the splash with the cologne?

I use an unscented aftershave balm (Nivea Sensitive) so I do not interfere with my fragrances. If I shave at night, I will use a scented aftershave. I don't use splashes, but I'm guessing people use products that disappear quickly so they can apply their scents. There was a time that I would try to match scents to be consistent (1805 shave cream and aftershave balm, followed by L'eau D'Issey)...but that becomes a very tall order.

Most AS splashes will dissipate in a matter of minutes. They should not interfere with your choice of fragrance...

I used to be on the lookout for matching products as well, but I soon realized that the cream/soap/as scents do not last very long. Its a rare case, such as AoS sandalwood asb, which lasts for a while, but even so, stays very close. Nowadays, I just don't bother - use whichever product you want, and apply fragrance according to mood. If you're really concerned, you could use a milder smelling product - T&H 1805 cream, for example, or an unscented asb.

The concentration of fragrance components (EO's or whatever) in Aftershaves is quite low.
It will not last long enough to interfere.
If you are still concerned, apply your fragrance just a little later, say 20 minutes to be sure.

If you are going to use strong aftershave splashes. or going on a date, it would be better to pair them. The strong ones have some good strength in them for 3 hours or more after application. The longest lasting is Joop Homme aftershave, which is still strong 8 hours later.

But most of the newer splashes tend to be a bit on the weak side, losing good strength after an hour or two.

I often use Cool Water aftershave balm, which has strength for several hours - mainly because I bought a bunch of tubes for a dollar each, and am using them up. It's main effect is that I can't really smell the EDT I'm wearing very well, since the balm is right next to my nose, but the scent output from the EDT is greater and others will notice that instead.

Alternatively, some splashes can be matched with similar style scents - eg. I use mossy Fahrenheit splash with mossy 212 Men EDT, or match fougeres with fougeres, leathery splash with leathery EDT. Obviously rich orientals wouldn't be good matches with fougeres.

To summarise, try matching for special occasions, but don't worry too much about it for everyday usage.

It entirely depends on the strength of your AS. I'm not familiar with the Floid products, so I can't speak to how they smell or their longevity, but if you were to use an A/S such as Pinaud Clubman for example, you would want to either pair your EdT with it, or just go without as Clubman is nearly as powerful as any cologne.

If the scent of Floid products dissipates rather quickly, then it shouldn't be an issue. When I use splashes, I always match my AS to my cologne. If I don't have a splash that matches, I roll with unscented balm just to be safe. I do the same with deodorant. I generally roll with unscented so that the scent of the deo doesn't mix in an unpleasing way with my SOTD.

I also alternate. If I'm using a strongly scented AS, I make that the fragrance of he day. If I am going to wear cologne, I go unscented with my shaving products, Feather Kanwa and Mandam Lucido being my go to choices.

Understood. Floid seems to hang around for quite a bit, so I may need to do some research on complimentary fragrances if I want to pair something up with it. Thanks, gents!

I prefer AS balms and finish with one of the Trumper Skin Foods. They have a scent, but is not very dominant. Not familiar with Floids enough to say whether they would conflict with another scent, but generally speaking, AS splashes do lurk longer. As. noted above, something like Clubman is pretty strong stuff.

I typically get a matching aftershave splash with my edts, but lately I have been wondering if that is as necessary as I used to think. Thanks to Randy I now have a bottle of Givenchy Gentleman edt, and have been wondering if I should get a Givenchy Gentleman aftershave or just go with something like Thayers Rose Petal. I do like an alcohol splash, but have been satisfied with a bit of Thayers. Any thoughts?

I use and love Speick aftershave splash. It smells great, feels great, but doesn't hang around for more than a couple of minutes so that I can also apply whichever edt I like for the day.
