Default 2 + months DE shaving - Atra comparison

So I've been DE shaving now for a little over two months. For the last couple weeks I've been very curious as to how close of a shave I've been getting in comparison to the Atra I used in the shower for the last 20+ years or so. I have pretty thick and full facial hair. I've been happy with my DE shaves and have been progressing nicely in skill level.

So into the shower with the Atra I went. It was a quick shave as I always did with the Barbisol Beard Buster shave cream. I paid careful attention to try and shave exactly as I always did for comparison purposes - nothing extra. One thing I noticed is how easy the Atra with the swivel head makes it to get correct blade angle. My face was nice and wet as I always shave after scrubbing and shampooing/conditioning so my beard has been wet for a while. I've always been DE shaving after and out of the shower but I may have to try it in the shower sometime.

So I got out of the shower and studied my face. It clearly delivered a good shave. However I AM getting just as good of a shave with my DE razors. My jawline and neck area still have a stubble that can only be felt with the hand and my mustache area still has the same appearance of a ever so slight shadow if I get right into the mirror. I can go against the grain on my neck and jawline with a DE (and most likely the Atra) but I haven't felt the reward was really worth it during the times I've done it. The mustache area is pretty much out of the question.

So in conclusion I enjoy the DE shaving a lot more than the Atra in terms of quality time to myself and getting to use the different DE's and soaps. I'm able to get as close of a shave with the DE's even as I'm still learning. The Atra will go back in the drawer and be there if I ever need it. Possibly if I'm in a severe spur of the moment time pinch I may call on it.

The only place I still have a tad of difficulty is under my nose and under the corners of my nose but that's the only place I have to do "touch up".

So now my curiosity has been satisfied.

Oh.... and I'm one of the ones that is not saving money.......... ;-)

An analogy would be the difference in an automatic and manual transmission in an auto. The auto will get you to where you want to go no matter what the transmission. However, the manual gives you more control and better handling.

Oh, you'll save money, but only if there really is a shavapolocypse.

The sticking point for me on multiblade razors is irritation and having to compound that with everyday use. That's the main reason why I kissed multiblade razors good-bye.

Jim - I agree. The DE gives me the enjoyment of manual selection as far as shave soaps and creams, DE's, brushes, blades, peace and quiet for a few etc...

LOL.... I've mentioned that a few times to my girlfriend of 7 years. The look of puzzlement on her face is pretty funny.

Yes John - that too. I got swept up with DE shaving so quickly I kind of forgot in only two months what kind of shave I had actually been getting before. After the Atra shave yesterday I noticed my face was looking and feeling pretty dry. My main down and dirty test was just to confirm I was getting at least as close with DE shaving. I discoverd I am at least as close with DE or better plus all the benefits of DE. I have to look clean and presentable in my work setting. As I mentioned before I have a very thick and tough beard so going against the grain on a daily basis doesn't seem plausible to me at this point but I enjoy a DFS as it's known around here :-)
