Does anyone wear a Rolex as their daily timepiece?

I was talking with a friend today. He said that some Rolex service centers won't work on vintage Rolex watches. That, more or less there are age cut of times. I do not know the extent of the truth on this.

That does seem to be true on 50+ year old watches....It's a parts issue more than anything else.

Is a new Rolex as good as the old ones? Been wanting to get a set for the wife and I - but honestly don't know too much about them.

The new ones are much better. ROLEX is like Porsche, they don't change for style...They change for substance....They are better than ever.

I wear mine pretty much daily, the only exceptions are when I'm on vacation as I don't care what time it is then. I even wear it when I'm in the less then savory parts of town, oh wait that's every day as I live in da hood.

That's really odd since they are heirloom pieces. Is that a company decision, or something at the independent level? I would hope a company of that tradition would have a factory service center.

In my current collection I have two Rolex (Sea-Dweller & Explorer II) watches. Over the years I’ve had more and less at different times. I have them on a separate insurance rider, so I’ve never been worried about wearing them. Watches are tools, so I choose the appropriate tool for the job. I don’t wear my Sea-Dweller when I’m working on my car, working in the yard, etc. On the other hand, I don’t wear my G-Shock, to a nice restaurant or church. Nothing wrong with either option, but these are my choices. I have too much money invested in my collection not to wear them and enjoy.

+1 for Bob. He fixed up my 1930s Rolex and had no problem getting parts. He was very helpful and went out of his way to explain all my options and the associated costs. Will definitely go back to him.

My dad has a Rolex that he's worn pretty much daily since he bought it. He got it in the 60's when he was stationed in Germany. It doesn't have the date window as they'd just come out with them and the salesperson warned him that they were new & uppity and advised him to buy a tried & true model without complications. As much as I know you're buying the Rolex name as much as anything else, I can't knock it, it's a good solid watch that's lasted him decades.

So, you have probably started wearing it. Would make the wife happy in any event. Have owned the President, the two tone Date-Just and stainless Submariner models. All great to wear, they are tough and keep reasonably good time. The Submariner is my everyday watch with Date-Just occasionally. Sold the President. Had kept that in the safe deposit box and never wore it. Never wear any of them out of the country. Expensive to service but should do this and with an authorized dealer.

Rolex Sea-Dweller most days. Then an Omega Planet Ocean a day or two per week.

Just wear it and let it get scratched. It's a tough watch.

Bought my GMT II after my first trip to iraq. Had my initials inscribed and year, (2004). That very same year my son was born and he is a Junior. So....he knows that someday he is going to get the watch which will have double meaning(s) for him. I wear it all the time with the exception of running/training or working on the vehicles.

Simply great watch that has gone everywhere with me and done amazing things.

A few years ago, for my 40th birthday, my wife gave me a very nice Rolex Oyster Perpetual. I have never worn it for fear that it is too valuable, and that it could get scratched, lost, or stolen. Anyone else wear theirs out and about on a regular basis (or not)?

Scratched? Not likely.. The Oyster Perpetual Sapphire Crystal and stainless steel looks like the day I got it after 15 years.
Lost or Stolen? If you never wear it... lost, stolen, in the closet? what's the difference?

As a young man, I saved my money for 3 years and bought my Rolex - an Air King - in 1978 for $475- which was a HUGE amount of money (then and now). It is the only timepiece I shall ever own. It's an investment. Yes, I scratched the hell out of it, banged it up, etc., that's a good thing ! It gives it character. Regarding service issues; Dallas has a Rolex service center. I took it in to be serviced. They told me they couldn't/wouldn't service it.
I wrote a letter to the President of Rolex USA, relating my disbelief and shock. Within 7 days, I received a phone call from the regional manager apologizing and an offer to service my timepiece. When I kick the bucket, my nephew will inherit a vintage Rolex. Wear it everywhere, it should be the only timepiece you will ever own.

No... My Oyster stays home with it's friends the Patek Philippe and Omega Constellation.

My daily watch is a VERY cheap Casio which has tides, moon phases, timer, and multi alarm function. When the battery runs down I will buy another watch as the cost of the battery is more than the entire watch.

I own a few nice watches, I bought them because they make me feel great, I wear them because I love them. Hopefully my children share the passion and can wear them with pride someday
