He's been my favorite author since my grandfather gave me his original paperback copy of Golden Apples of the Sun. that was my favorite story in there. I keep a hardback copy of it on my desk at school. I've had a few students ask to borrow it. they all say they enjoy it, which gives me hope for humanity.
strangely, on modern reprints of the book, The Pedestrian was left out! I consider it a conspiracy.

Also, to my fellow educators, I hope your beginning-of-the-year routines aren't too frustrating this go-round!Just be sure to read up on your Harry Wong and make sure you get a haircut. Make it look like you've lived at school all summer.

Thank you for the appreciation. I have worked 22 years as a School Psychologist in the public school system. For the last 13 years I have also been a part time instructor (Doctoral level)for a local university in the graduate school. I truly enjoy working with Special Education teachers in the school and who have been through my classes.
My inspiration was a professor I had for an intro psych class my freshman year (1983)!
Today was the first day of classes for our district. Going to be a long year :-)
I also am not a straight razor man but would be like to be kept in mind.

It's quieted down here, so I'm going to end this PIF a little early. I've really appreciated reading all these entries and the dedication all the entrants have put into serving others.
I drew from my hat, and--besides the rabbit that you see in my avatar--joshuastar's name came out. Joshua, please PM me your address so I can get your package to you.
Also, I decided to have a runner up. Quigg, I have a razor and paddle strop to send you. You can at least have them handy when you're ready for he plunge.![]()
Jared,
Thanks so much, both for the PIF and for bringing attention and positive comments to all the teachers in this forum. To tell you the truth, I had totally forgotten about your offer in the busyness of the first weeks of school, until I heard from you today. I think I have my work cut out for me this year; some years are more challenging than others (But, that's how we learn and grow, right?). Anyway, I couldn't imagine doing anything else but teach. Thanks to all who shared their stories, and I wish all the dedicated educators continued inspiration and success.
Congrats to Joshua and Quigg. Kudos to Jared for the great PIF.
Happy Shaving Gentlemen !
I'm rather speechless right now.
I mean, part of that is because I have back-to-school voice...
But honestly, I'm humbled, excited and I genuinely feel appreciated.
That's not something you expect as an educator but it's quite nice when it happens.
Thank you, danjared. This will be my first straight. I'm intimidated but definitely looking forward to acquiring the skill!

Congratz to both of you!
Jason:BOTOC, LOBOS, KOTV. Sort of on the fence about burley...
Congrats.

Awesome PIF Idea. I don't know if I count as an educator or not. I'll let you decide.
I am a safety health and environmental supervisor for Unilever. I currently work in a margarine plant (Country Crock, I Can't Believe It's Not Butter and several others). I don't actually supervise anyone. However, I do regular training sessions based on the three topics in my title such as LOTO, confined space entry, chemical handling and hazcom, first aid, storm water permit regulations, etc... I got into this field because I worked in production management for 12 years and saw first hand how many accidents were prevented due to training - I didn't really understand the environmental aspect until after I got the job.
The most recent example of how my training has impacted someone: I did chemical training with a focus on injury prevention and response. 3 days later a caustic tank started leaking at a valve. An operator went into the room to determine what was leaking. He slipped and fell on his back in the caustic. Without the training on how to react (he immediately stripped and showered for ~30 minutes), he likely would have severe injuries. Caustic in clothing first kills the nerves and then continues to eat into you; such that you may not notice a 3rd degree burn until hours later. He ended up with no injuries and thanked me for stressing the importance of forgetting modesty and showering long past the point you think is enough.
There have been other rewarding moments; but that is the most recent.
Thanks for the great posting and good luck to everyone entered!
Woops! Should have read the whole thread. Went back to see everyone else's posts and noticed it was over.![]()
Congrats guys!
I have to say I really enjoyed reading everyone posts. Considering our country is in a very reactionary "blame the teacher" day and age, I am thrilled to see so many people supporting educators.

Thanks for the kind words! I am starting Year 34 of teaching. It isn't the easiest job, but I still love it. It can be incredibly rewarding when a student "gets it." Sometimes, it takes a few years. At my last Open House evening, a young man I had taught years before came up to me to tell me, "Mr. Q, you always told me if I buckled down and worked hard, I could do really well in school. You were right; I'm getting good grades now." This was a boy who was always trying to avoid work when he was in my class. But I never gave up on him. I was thrilled that this seventh grader would seek out his fourth grade teacher, me, to tell me I had made a difference for him. It really made my day.
By the way, I love your Bill Maher quote; I might borrow it for my signature line!
