Sure it does! Gives him a direction to try instead of wildly stabbing at a sampler pack.

For example, many people here are saying Astra SP, which as well work good for me in the DE89. Odds are it'll work for him too. There are a fair amount of blades out there that work for a large majority of those who try them. If OP didn't know about how good Astra SP's normally are, now he does.

I find the Astras aren't that agreeable for me in my Edwin jagger, just bought a box of sharks so I will try those out, but the next time I use it, it will be holding a Feather.
It is a great razor, I don't think you can go to far astray using any DE blade in it, just depends on which DE blade works best for you and the only way to figure that out is to get some different ones and have at it. I hope you enjoy your razor and welcome aboard, a lot of good folks around these parts.

I just had a pretty lousy shave with Red Personnas in my EJ DE89. Much more razor burn than I've ever had with Astras. Granted, I'm a newbie and this may have been more about my technique than about the blades, but I swear I didn't do anything different. So I'm sticking with Astras until I get brave enough to try the Feathers from my sample pack.

I prefer Feathers and Astras in mine. But have had success with 7 Oclock yellows and sharks as well.

Feathers, Personna Med Preps ( last longest ), and Astras work best for me. Red IP was a rough shave for me although I'd really like to make it work.

i've switched from derbies to astras with mixed success. still, when i catch a snag i'm pretty sure it's my own darned fault.

Ive had Derbys, 7'Oclock Yellows, and Astra SPs in mine so far. And for me and my face the Astras were remarkably better. And I thought the yellows were better than the Derbys.

So far the Astra SPs work for me and this morning I used my first Rapira and I had an awesome shave with no irritation... but I did pay extra attention to my angle since I used a derby yesterday and it was like napalm across my neck...

It really doesn't work that way. "Popularity" and "best for a given individual" are two entirely different things. There might be a chance that a popular blade will work but that's not a given. It's entirely misleading if popular options don't work for a given individual. Again, there's good reason why "get a sampler" is standard advice around here. You can read opinions all day long but in the end it's first hand experience that matters.

If you want recommendations then give people something to work with. What blades have you used? What have you liked? What have you disliked? Why? For feedback on subjective matters we need information on the specific individual. Otherwise the person might as well randomly select from the options available.

Again, it's not a matter of the DE but a matter of the individual.

"Good" is just as subjective as "best", "cheap", "expensive", "worth", etc.

Going through a sampler I've preferred the Shark Super Chromes in my DE 89 as well, haven't tried the Astras in them but definitely +1 for the sharks.

I wouldn't say they are two entirely different things. After all, the very reason for their popularity is because they often are best for many individuals. When so many people suggest the same blade, it tells OP that x blade worked for so many people, and odds are it will work for him as well. It's better than him getting a sample pack and trying out many blades most people dislike, having many bad shaves. Which is what I said, it gives OP direction whether he gets a sample pack or not.

Yes, you're right, it is OP's experience that will determine whether it's a good blade for him. But it's not helpful to OP to say "sorry, no answer for you", when all he wants is a few recommendations.

Blades aren't subjective as we would like to think. Given absolutely proper technique, most people can use most blades. A sampler pack is not required, and it is slowly losing it's status as the standard recommendation, for good reasons. For one example, a newbie won't even know the difference between different blades starting out, and will be quick to blame poor shaves on blade hopping, rather then settling in with one blade, keeping all variables constant, and working on technique.

I recommend a carton of Astra SP's to new shavers nowadays. Why? They are cheaper than any good sampler I've seen, a large majority of people can get a decent shave with them, and if in the off chance a newb can't use them they can easily sell them and try another brand.

I agree it is a matter of personal experience, for instance I used it with derby and it works for me. Probably it would help, as someone pointed earlier, to tell us what other blades you have been using, to get a general idea. It's also useful to know what else you do in the shaving process, the prep is also important to get a quality shave, apart from the blade itself.

Astra SP's are always my starting point for any razor. You'll find as your razor collection grows that different head dimensions cause blades to behave differently. For example: blade X in razor X may suck, but blade X in razor Y is excellent. It's a trial by error for the most part. Astra's have always performed great to excellent in all the razors I've used, but that's just my experience.

Another vote for Feather. Looks like Feather is leading by a wide margin.
