Another vote for the 40's style Super Speed. Gives a great shave. Want a little more agressive? Back the knob off just a little bit and it's good at getting at the cross grain patches. Next step up is the Adjustable. For non-Gillette? Get a Merkur Progress and start in at the #1 setting.

Also, the underrated Schick Krona is a wonderful mild razor with a long handle.

In case you haven't seen it, here is a good article comparing the EJ DE89L & the Merkur 34C, which might help if you are trying to decide between the two.

If money is not an issue then my vote goes to Lord L6:) just ignore the low price tag.

The safety bar is a bit sharper/pointy than other razor which makes it very easy to track and get a sense on how much pressure you apply. Too much pressure is the mistake beginners make all the time.
I started with Merkur 23C/180. Moved to a Merkur Long handle progress (gave away the 23C). Now the L6 is used almost all the time and I wish I started with it.
    My full review here:

If you find it too mild, you can also 'mod' it like so:

    Good luck!

I just have to agree with that! I have several Gillettes, Merkurs and Mühles but it is the Lord that gets most used.

I think the Weber would be a great starting razor. It is mild, but can provide a great shave. It is similiar to the EJ89 but I feel that grip is better, but it is also twice the price.

    Welcome to B&B.
    Vintage: Gillette SuperSpeed
New Production: Edwin Jagger DE89. My handle preference is the Barley Chrome.

    +20 on EJ 89

Welcome! I'm a new DE shaver and on my second week of using an Edwin Jagger DE89BA11 I've never been happier with my shaves. Good luck!
