Default Help needed how to re-knot?

    Hi everyone...

I recently got this old x2 Simpsons brush. The knot is shot.... I want to reknot it but the handle has three cracks...
any suggestions on how I should go about taking the old knot out without splitting the brush open?

    Here are two pics..

    Thanks

Cut the knot down as far as you can and they use a drill or dremmel to carefully drill out the rest. You could also wrap the handle in some making tape to hairs against further cracking while you remove the knot.

I'd start by wrapping it in tape and putting a screw type hose clamp around it to reinforce it while working on it.

As for getting the old knot out, I think the steam method would be worth a try. Its been explained in various posts, if not here on one of the other forums.

I sure would be extremely careful about drilling, etc, I was able to remove a nylon knot today from a Lucite Everready. But it wasn't of significant value, nor did it have cracks.

I did reknot a cracked Kent sometime ago. I think I just got pretty luck. I drilled it first and "carefully" worked out the rest of the knot a little at a time using a very sharp small chisel.

    Go slow. Good luck.

    Slowly...
As others have said put a stack of masking tape on to protect the handle - I continually drop them for some reason. I haven't used any forstner bits (don't have them) so tend to drill a 10mm into my knots and then patiently use a pair of long nose or a wee sharp edge pointy tool I ground (like a small knife) to slowly pick out the remaining hair - have to work at an angle so that while digging out hair you don't damage the top edge of the hole.
Downside of this manual technique is if there is a lot of old glue in the handled - that can't be gotten out easily - usually switch to a small diameter stone in a drill at this point and slowly get the diameter I want.
Biggest secret is to work slowly and make sure that if you slip you can't damage the handle or yourself - frustration and rushing and your biggest enemies.

    Enjoy!

You may also be able to bolster the cracks by dribbling a bit of superglue in them. Just be sure to wipe up any excess right away.
