Zeds look so weird in cursive because of the Cyrillic influence. The Russian Z is 3 in their alphabet, and somehow this managed to become the Z for English speakers who write in cursive. And I just thought we borrowed the Ushanka hat, vodka, and caviar from the Russians.

I know of at least one who does. "Don't let my horses oat, I've told people aboat that. Close the gate or they'll take off!" The sign on his gate says "Caution, horses about".

I'd have to admit that, when spelling something out for someone, zed is less likely to be misunderstood than zee, but I'll stick with zee. Zed just sounds too British (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Actually, when I'm spelling something out for someone over the phone, my Navy experience comes into play and I usually say "Zulu".

Zed makes me think British as well, solely due to Shawn of the Dead when they are making fun of the Romero thing about not saying the word "zombie" in zombie movies. "The zed-word, don't say it!"

I fix computers and we use the NATO Phonetic alphabet all the time. I find it funny when someone doesn't know it and makes up a word in response to what you say.
For example, I'll read out a code on a piece of equipment like "Five-Papa-Charlie-two" and later on in the conversation they will give me an answer and say "uh....the code is....six...uh...pogo...frank...four..."

That so true. I've said 'p' as in pneumonia before, could hear a pin drop.

Ironically, in third grade my teacher's name was Ms Zensen, so I got to write cursive Z's quite a lot! It really *is* a ridiculous letter in cursive, and it never seems to look right or flow well.

You know the Alphabet song by the Bare-Naked Ladies is the new source of phonetic sounds for me! A is for Aisle, B is for Bdellium, C is for Czar, if you see 'em would you mind telling him.

    'R is for Argyle ...'

    'No it isn't!'

'Yeah, but I couldn't find a good word for R.'

Be there or be square. Only I can do both!
