I've contacted some of the mods on this, and so far have received no replies. I'd be interested in how many members might be interested in a sub-forum on disposable blade straights, or the "shavettes" as they are grouped into. I've seen a good many posts from members who use these razors, and wonder if enough interest might warrant its own group. I for one use only this type of straight, and I have all the top of the line Feather and Kai straights. I also have and use the Parker straights. IMHO the shave that the disposables give is one that can't be touched by a regular straight. Don't get me wrong, I've tried and used the regular straight, but I've found that the sharpness and the shave of the disposables is much better.

I think the sub-forum could deal with all aspects of the "shavette" straight, from use and technique, to comparing the different type's of these straights, ease of use, sturdiness, etc.

I for one feel that the disposable straight gets put down as not being a real straight, and gets poo pooed by many who don't give them a chance, or take the time to develop their technique for using one.

I use a parker shavette, so far I get a better and quicker shave compared to de's
but that is possibly more my lack of skills with the de than anything.

I do hope to eventually move to a straight but space and safety considerations make that not feasable in the near future.
I would be instrested in hearing from others abt tips and technique.

i never did understand them. if you have to continue to buy more blades??? i just dont see the point. hone and strop the real deal, and never buy a blade again.

I have a semi-interest in the Feather RX..mostly the folder.

I've had several blades honed by pros, and some of them have been extremely sharp, at least for the first shave, but I still don't think I would classify them as as sharp as a disposable DE blade. Beyond the first shave, the sharpness declines somewhat (or maybe even during the first shave). This may be either due to my shaving technique or stropping - I'm not sure. But I find that I have to employ guillotine strokes, j-hooking, etc to get the hair to cut closer, whereas with the shavette, I just go straight in the direction of the hair. Also with a straight, I have to apply some pressure, a feather-light touch does not work. With a shavette, a feather-light touch is essential. And despite those technique changes, I get a better 2-pass shave with my Dovo shavette than a 3-pass straight shave.

Anyway - back to the OP's point - I personally use both types of straights, and have no issues with discussions in the same forum. But, I would support a separate sub-forum, if only to allow members to ask questions without fear of being reprimanded.

I was trying a while for a Kamisori forum. Shavette discussion needs to begin to crowd normal razor discussion in the general forums. Then the possibility of a sub forum begins to brew.

So far Kamisori discussions, like shavettes, ebb and flow.

From the above responses it looks like this won't even get started, let alone fly. Oh well, I thought I'd give it a shot, but it looks like too many members have bought into the hype that the disposables are not worth the bother.

No harm in gathering information on if there is interest.
B&B has been most successful when we let the discussion drive the creation of forums and subforums rather than creating a forum and trying to fill it with discussion.
Unfortunately the few times that was tried, it failed miserably (remember the Method Shaving Forum?)

Conversely, we had a lot of folks asking about a single edge razor subforum long before there was enough support for it. Once the topic became viable and able to survive on its own, a subforum was created.
