Just received my first coticule

it is not too small. i have 4*2" and i generally use it horizantally!

I have a coticule of similar dimensions. While I have not taken a flea market find to shave ready on it, I have done full honings on it. Time consuming using such a small stone.

Good job. There is a lot of satisfaction in doing a job for yourself, and doing it very well!

Okay, I finally got around to taking some pictures of my coti. As previously mentioned, it's quite small but also quite capable of getting the job done. I've been practicing with it daily, and have had nice shaves of of two different razor that I myself honed. I think I'm officially addicted to honing.



Here's the coti side by side with an unnecessarily large slurry stone:

i like that real razor, i have one i think mine is a george korn. i rescaled mine in cocobolo because it had a cracked scale and i wanted 2 enlarge the size of the scales. they take a wicked edge. i'm happy your honing is progressing well. by the way i bought one of those coti's in that size with the idea of using it 4 a slurry stone but i have honed 3 razors on it using another slurry stone and it performed admirably. i think it will go into my travel kit. Your "slurry stone" is also a quite capable size for touching up an edge or even a full honing with practice. You aactually find it easier to get nice edges from that narrow stone. I say that because I had a slurry stone the size that was also a soft coticule and it made some very nice edges quite easily and quickly. They are both very nice. Welcome to the Rabbit hole its a long way down so just enjoy your time with us.

The real's are nice little razors. The way the handle is affixed reminds me of mid-century kitchen knives. Also, since I can't for the life of me figure out how to shave my left sideburn with a Kami while following the "flat side on your face" rule (Short of removing my left ear and shaving that side of my head bald), they strike me as a nice compromise if you want a non-folding straight.

You aren't alone. I think most of the guys who feel that way just use Kami's though. It feels nice to be in a special "club" rather than being "that weirdo who took the scales off his razor".

Nah, that's not that bad. What is really hard is trying to apply the same rule to a folding kamisori. At least I'm convinced that they're weird and non-traditional enough that I can forego that.

In thinking of getting a coticule From a Swedish vendor, but they don't seem to have slurry stones. Is there any in particular that suits a coticule better? Or should I look just for a standard or selected bout on the Ardennes-coticule web page?

Ardennes will provide a free slurry stone. Not sure if you need to ask. It helps to make up for the shipping cost.

But I'm buying the stone from an Swedish web page, don't think that they include the slurry stone. Reason I'm choosing the vendor is that I have a gift certificate there and more soaps n stuff to last me 2 years.

Sure, but you want to be careful about what brand of sandpaper you get. Some of them release grit very easily.

If money is tight, you could have gone with lapping film, and for less money, had a honing surface 10 times that size. But you will enjoy the coticule. Unfortunately, now you are hooked. I see a much larger, much more expensive coticule in your not to distant future.

I do enjoy the film, and will not abandon it right yet, but since there isn't all that much I really really want on from the certain page, why not invest it in a stone. Don't think I need more soap, nor razors. Leaves it to aftershaves and scentes, but that's not near the fun. I think everyone is doomed to fall into their own holes, some fall in the hone, som in the razors, some in soaps,or brushes or de or or or...
