Thread: Modern Wedge

  1. Default Modern Wedge

Here's a potentially dumb question - is there a modern production wedge out there?

I shaved with a vintage wedge today, and while I don't think it was any better than the hollow grounds I have, I'm intrigued by the weight and general looks of it.

It seems like a less common ground, is there any reason for that? Seems like it would be less labor/machining for the manufacturer. Do customers just not favor the wedge as much?

I'm very new to straights, so I apologize if these are common questions... my google-fu is sometimes lacking (I used the site: function).

The nearest you will get is a 1/4 ground, although someone had a Wacker near wedge IIRC. Hart makes a massive 7/8s that might fit your bill nicely. As mentioned Wacker makes some too.

Most of mine are vintage wedges or near wedges - love the heft of them. It takes longer to put a bevel on a wedge compared with a hollow ground razor, that may explain matters.

I have a David Issard and its awesome. It's modern as far as I know. It mows thru hair like it wants BBS more than I do. It also was easier to hone than my W&B wedge which is still shipwrecked in a drawer and in need of love. People probably dont favor the wedge as the Capt. said it just takes extra time to hone and you have to use tape from what I have read to get the angle up because it lacks concavity.
EXPECT success in every shave and the universe will certainly make way for that success.

Appreciate the replies and suggestions, gents.

Guess the extra honing time/difficulties would help explain it.

I'll check out David Issard, Wacker, and Hart.

Just in case your looking at them, I have a Wacker "wedge". Great razor but it's a 1/4 grind. The Wacker 1/4 grind is more of a 1/2 hollow. Both excellent blades just ground a bit more than described.
