Default What are some of the television series watched by non United States members?

You guys from Sweden, Norway, England, and all of Europe and Asia, New Zealand, and Austrailia- this is for you! I've discovered I like foreign films, and was just curious as to what is out there on TV that I may be able to find and watch for a different perspective. For an example we started watching Doc Martin and absolutely love it! I really enjoy the different perspective based on the cullture differences around the world.

One you guy's might like, because it is kind of topical here, was a series called Underbelly - Razor. I was about the true story of two crime families in Sydney who went to war with one another during the depression. Because it was a mandatory jail sentence if you were caught with a gun (how little things have changed), they took to carrying straight razors, and were not shy about using them. Gory stuff, and the show has lots of sex and violence, so view discretion is advised, but it was a quite interesting look at the underworld of the day.

English shows- Misfits, No Heroics, Black Books, The Mighty Boosh, Dead Set, Top Gear.

    Japan - MONKEY!!!

I don't really watch the Finnish shows, all they do is take a concept from (usually) US tv and make a finnish version of the show (talking about idols, the voice, etc.). I do like me some English shows though, Top Gear and Black Adder spring to mind.

The Thin Blue Line (starring Rowan Atkinson)Bottom (Rik Mayall & Adrian Edmondson)Fawlty Towers (John Cleese & Prunella Scales) possibly one of the funniest British TV series ever made. Only made 12 episodesOnly Fools & Horses (David Jason) you can't beat Del Boy!

We have a TV series made in Australia called "Rush". It's about coppers in Melbourne. We get most of our TV series either from the US or UK. A couple of good ones (at least to me) from the UK are "Bonekickers" and "Kidnap & Ransom". I do not watch reality TV. If I want to watch people making fools of themselves, I just drive over to the mall.

One piece of advice: stay away from German TV series.

From the UK, I enjoyed 'Luther' and 'Sherlock' tremendously.

I'm in the US, but I'd like to recommend a couple of my favorites. One is the British series Midsomer Murders. Another series is Wallander. There's the original Swedish series and also a British series based on the Swedish detective. For laughs, the 1990's British series Keeping Up Appearances. Sadly, one of my TV heroes, Onslow from KUA, died last week.

My favorite British show is "Peep Show," but it is very edgy. If you like Doc Martin, it may not be your cup of tea. Downton Abbey is extremely popular. I enjoy that...

I've been enjoying Twenty Twelve when I can get it. The Thick of It in small doses and of course, Doctor Who.

I had no idea some of the British shows mentioned here were known outside of the UK.

tinashubby, Doc Martin wasn't something I used to watch but it was shown of a Sunday evening here and other programmes I recall being shown in the same timeslot, which I guess might appeal to Doc Martin viewers, are Kingdom starring Stephen Fry (same channel, same timeslot as Doc Martin) and on the BBC, who at that time usually do period drama, Upstairs Downstairs, Lark Rise to Candleford and Call The Midwife - none really to my taste though so I can't comment on whether they were good or not.

njpaddy, are you famailiar with One Foot In The Grave? It's a comedy show from the 90s like Keeping Up Appearances, but I always found it much funnier.

A programme that I recently watched and would recommend is a Danish/Swedish drama called The Bridge, I thought it was very good.

If you haven't watched "Spaced" or "The IT Crowd" you're missing out. They're both on Netflix and are probably two of the best comedy genre TV shows I've ever watched hands down.

Thanks for the tip. I just got the last Nettles Midsomer episode in the mail from Netflix and was looking for another series to start.

If you liked Spaced and The IT Crowd, you might also like Father Ted. It was written by Graham Linehan who wrote The IT Crowd. Black Books - which legion mentioned before - was also co-written by Graham Linehan.

If you're looking for another detective series you might like Morse. There's also Cracker, a detective series from the 90s which I recently watched this having missed it at the time, and I thought it was good. A Touch Of Frost is another one.

If you like crime drama then Silent Witness gets my vote. Nowhere near as big budget as any of the CSI shows but good none the less.

For comedy also search for "Gimme Gimme Gimme"

Some good programs already been mentioned. Twenty Twelve has the be te funniest of the recent stuff though having worked in an office made it much funnier. For those who don't know, it was the fictional version of LOCOG, the people who did all the planning and infrastructure for the Olympics in London. I'd swear they had the real offices bugged as they seemed to know about cockups before they were announced. The only thing that let it down in the end was that the real LOCOG were even worse than the fictional ones!

Father Ted? Best comedy of all time I reckon. I have the full set on disc. One Foot in the Grave. Brilliant.

Morse has been mentioned as a crime drama. I actually prefer the follow on, Lewis, about Morse's sergeant. Still had the same wonderful Oxford backdrop.

I also enjoyed the Touch of Frost though I do reckon David Jason was getting a bit old to be a copper!

Another old series that I really enjoyed was Teachers. A wonderful bunch of misfits who often joined the kids behind the bike sheds for a smoke! American viewers might recognise Andrew Lincoln who is currently a cop being chased by zombies in The Walking Dead. It was set in Bristol in the west country so the scenery is a bit different! Not far from me either.
