I love my Whirpool, but I don't know if it's available in the US.
Look for one having: lots of power, rotating plate, crisp plate, grill.

I heard somewhere about microwaves blowing an internal fuse. Mine did, I got replacements at an electronics supply house about 6 bucks each. The first two replacements blew quickly, the third replacement lasted about a year. I never figured out why they were blowing. It was worth the effort to me to replace fuses, got me another year out of the oven.

Many years ago, when microwave ovens were first available, I got one that cost around 600 quid. It may have been a Hitachi, but it was a long time ago. It had some sophisticated aroma-detection system that could 'sense' when the food was cooked.

We used it to bake potatoes. And it was huge, and ugly.

After we'd had it about three or four years the previous Mrs Price was getting the ironing board out of the cupboard next to where this brute sat, and it slipped from her grasp. Somehow, one of the feet smashed the glass door. I took it to the dealer - we had bought it from an independent retailer - and they quoted some outrageous price for a new door, so we binned it and brought a cheap, basic model.

Ever since then, I have brought maybe three other microwaves and each time it is cheap, basic, and fairly small. The only thing I really look for is a digital timer, not a dial. We only ever use them for reheating stuff, or softening butter from the fridge. The one we have here is an LG, cost around SGD100 and it does the job.

Replaced ours a couple of months ago.
Was going to go with GE, but all of the reviews commented the the buttons crapped out prematurely.

Ended up going with a Whirlpool and she loves it.

I've had the same Sharp microwave for 15+ years. I use it every day, it won't die.
