    Default admittedly, a dumb question...

When people say they get 3 (or whatever) shaves out of a blade, are they meaning:
3 individual passes or 3 shaving "sessions" (nights of shaving)?

Three shaves means three separate shaves and not just 3 passes.

Don't worry, the only stupid question is the one which you don't ask and which bothers you for years......

    Depends in which context...

Some shavers do 3 passes per shave. Some shavers can do 3-5 shaves per blades/session. Some do more than that, some do less than that. You can suspect that if you do 2 passes, your blade will probably last longer than if you would do 3 passes. I suspect here it's 'sessions'...

Thanks to you both. Shaving is whole lot more involved when you do it correctly. A whole lot more than just mindless lathering and rubbing Mach3 across your face.

Which is good, cause i'm 5 weeks cigarette free (after 16 years) and just recently started DE shaving. So instead of a cigarette before bed, now I shave. It's a ton more relaxing and it doesn't kill you.

Welcome Churley and I totally agree...a shave instead of a cigarette will be waaaaaaay better for you and will also relax you before bed. Works for me!

Yup, what they said. A "shave" is the whole process regardless of passes, or "session". So much effects blade longevity that you can't even begin to compare blades by other's recommendations... blade type, beard type, beard prep, soap or cream type, lather quality, skin type and tolerance to the blade, shaving technique, etc. When a person tooses a blade is totally personal too. Some guys change blades after onw shave because they can, blades are cheap, they prefer a fresh blade. Some guys like to push a blade for 6-7 shaves because they can do that long, they like to get as much out of a blade as they can, they are frugal, they like a routine of changing the blade once a week. Most of us fall in the middle somewhere and get 3-5 shaves per blade and change when a blade seems to pull or irritate.

Welcome and congrats on being Cigarette free!
I shave before I sleep, a nice lavender soap and enough time to straight shave is a perfect way to slow down my day before bed!

I do 1 pass per shave, but shave daily. Any more is overrated IMO. Plus, I get razor burn if I do more than 1. I pass XTG, and I'm good.

Welcome aboard churley. Yes it is generally thought that it is the shaving session as you put it and not the individual passes that counts as number of shaves per blade.
You will find that this will vary greatly with the brand of the blade. Enjoy your shaves and congratulations on being smoke free. Just think, you will now have a hobby to spend all that money your are saving by not smoking.

It's 3 different days of shaving. Your job now is to figure out how many you can get from a given blade.

Remember now (at least in New York), 4 packs = one EJ razor. What a bargain!
