Default Shaving is no longer a chore!

Newbie here. I picked up some shave cream and a brush from The Art of Shaving and started lurking the forums. I ended up purchasing an Edwin Jagger DE89L and a sampler pack of blades from West Coast Shaving because of some favorable reviews. I started with a 3 pass shave using a Derby blade as my first blade to try from the sample pack. I must say that shaving is much more enjoyable and I look forward to it. My shaves are much closer than my multi blade razor and getting better every time.

    Amazing, isn't it?

I've been at it long enough that I sometimes forget how stupidly tedious the shaving chore was before stumbling on DE shaving and this place.

Mike, excellent choice on switching to DE shaving and, obviously, excellent choice on registering to B&B! The sample pack is certainly a great idea, give each blade a period of test of two/three shaves and go on. At the end you'll easily find out which one(s) you like more and work better for you. Enjoy!

I know exactly how you feel. I would hate shaving, I would despise doing it. So much so that for a while, I wouldn't. But now, I find myself looking forward to shaving. I shave at night and it makes a great wind-down at the end of a day.

Thanks Marco, I was wondering how long to go before switching to another blade type. I was going to switch every week. Three shaves sounds good. Here is what came in my sample pack:

    Derby
    Personna Red
    Astra
    Crystal
    Feather

Any preference on what to try next on the list? I was going to save the Feather for last.

Exactly how I feel now. I used to go days without shaving because it sucked. Now I look forward to it.

+1 on what Marco said. I would like to add that even if you don't like a blade the first few times you try it, somewhere down the road when technique improves you might like a blade you didn't before.

    Mike:

We appear to have the same sampler pack.

I started with the Derby and then moved on to the Astra, which I like much better. I've had five shaves with the Astras so far. I may try one more Astra blade, and then I'm moving on to the Personna Red or the Crystal. I'm definitely saving the Feather blades for last. I want to be a bit more confident about my technique before I try those, given what I've read here about the sharpness of Feather blades.

Hello and welcome Mike! Having recently discoved the wonderful world that is DE shaving has been a real eye opener for me too. I still just can't comprehend the blank looks on friends faces when I tell them about how much better shaving is and how I look forward to it when they complain about shaving with cartridges and how they hate shaving... Yet they don't want to switch! You sir are one of the enlightened ones. Sounds like you have a great start. You've picked a great starter razor and the blade sampler pack is an excellent idea. I myself was using an EJ DE89 with Feather blades (as that worked best for my sensitive skin. sharper blade = less passes and less irritation). I recently started shaving with a 1962 Gillette Slim using the Feathers and getting the best shaves ever. Pretty soon you may find yourself experimenting with different soaps and cremes and possibly even getting different razors and brushes. It's a great hobby that changes something menial you likely disliked before into something fun again. I love it. :)
