Default Most Over Rated Products of 2012

With the resurrection of an old "Over Rated" thread and since many re-formulations and new products have been introduced since then, I thought it might be beneficial to have a more time specific thread.

So what are the most over rated shave products so far this year?

I have to say GFT Lime Skin Food and Captain's Choice Bay Rum. Skin Food is sticky on my skin and people tell me I smell like a canned ham when I wear Captain's Choice.

Castle Forbes Lime shaving cream. Scent is fantastic and slickness is good, but protection during the shave is mediocre at best.

In other words, it is a 38 dollar cream that smells great but performs like a puck of cheap glycerine soap. ymmv.

MdC. I always vote for MdC in these threads. Not because it is not a good product (it is), but a shaving soap could never live up to the hype it receives. I have actually seen a few people recently who have declared it the best soap they have ever used.....before they have have ever used it. Might be the definition of hype right there. Good product among many good products (I own it and use it in a large rotation), but if it were available for $8.00 on Amazon in a plastic tub, I don't think it would have as many fan boys.

Arko! There's nothing special about it except its price; praiseworthy for its very low price; boring soapy scent - neither good nor bad, just like old fashioned home-made laundry soap; producing good lather similar to many other good soaps.

MdC +1 Good soap and mild pleasant smell but not intoxicating and memorable.

I recently purchased MDC, didn't believe the claim of a 5 second load for mounds of lather... definitely not true. I do enjoy the soap, nice and slick, though the lather isn't as thick as some others, I do get a good shave. I don't have the need to use it everyday but like the scent, a Lavender & Rosemary which I find refreshing, and it leaves my face moisturized. I'm glad I bought it and like using it, Though I doubt I'd re-order it again, I think it's worth trying.

I wouldn't say don't order it, just be wary of the over-the-top reviews around here and you won't be disappointed. It is just a shave soap...a shave soap with some good qualities and some not so good qualities, like many others.

I thnk if it wernt for the price of MDC a lot of people would order more... thats just my opinion as I think it is in the top 5 soaps available based on performance. Overated IMO are a lot of random razor blades... too many to name. Everytimne I experiment with them im always let down and go right back to Feather.

I would vote for the R41 razor. Seems many are as terrified of it as like it.. Over hyped IMHO!

I am usually disappointed when I fall for the hype or go high end. So far this year it's:

    1. Pre de Provence shave soap. Great lather but mediocre performance. I think I used it twice before I removed the soap to reuse the tin for something else.
    2. Harris Almond stick. My bowls of Arlington and Lavender are worth the hype, but I did not like the almond stick. I put it in the empty PdP tin and it performs much better as a puck, although it still has no scent.
    3. Simpsons shave cream. A good cream, but not worth the $31 it cost me with shipping. I just don't think it's $10 better than Salter and I find Salter a slicker cream. As I seem to have issues with unscented or lightly scented products, I plan on buying one of Simpson's scented creams when they come out, just to be sure. The proposed Lavender-Vetiver scent has my interest.

    L'ome de Durance soap.
Not even useable as shower cake.
Only shaving soap I've ever used that doesn't lather, no slip and vile smell.
Worth every penny of the £20 spent for something so poor
If you only think you can, maybe you shouldn't!

You know, that's a great idea. If everyone sent me their MDC I might even make it through the 2012 shave purchase sabbatical.
