I like to break out the Mach 3 on occasion, it works just fine for me. I still have some of my stash left over from my headshaving days, I found some at a flea market that worked out to a bit over a $1 a cart so I scooped them all up. Just recently at a local thrift store they had grab bags full of miscellaneous toiletries for $1 each, I found one that had 16 Mach 3 carts along with a couple toothbrushes and small containers of toothpaste and shampoo. No way could I pass that up!

When I fly I take my old Atra or Sensor and they give fine shaves. Any more than 2 blades and I get terrible razor burn. YMMV

Maybe your technique sucks with a cart since you only use a straight these days. I find cartridges stupid easy to use to get a fine shave. But like someone else said, it's kinda dissatisfying though.

Beaver & Blade it shall be called
I think I can get cartridges for about $2.50 each and depending on how many shaves they are good for the $ difference might not be all that great. One shave for 5 weeks might be going a bit far but a week from 1 Mach 3 cartridge is possible ... maybe .. not sure if I would want to be the test dummy. Also I only ever owned one Mach 3 & one soap, now I have 4 soaps and 10 razors so who is saving money?

I think the Sensor Excel was the best cartridge razor ever made. I really think they stopped them because you just get too many good shaves off one before they start to go bad. They are a bit aggressive at first though. I use them still in my head blade and get BBS head shaves in the shower in only one ATG pass and easily over two dozen shaves per cartridge.

Ok we have ro remember that we are a unique group. Lots of us like vintage shaving gear when most people upgraded for the newer, "more efficient" fad. To all of my friends the idea of using a used razor is repulsive but doesn't bother me in the least. To alot of people the idea of using a straight razor is very far fetched and dangerous.

Just like writting with fountain pens and using pocket watches, some times things just become outdatedmostly for improvement or convience. That is the beauty of this site.

Unfortunaly the Mach 3 the Fusion and the Schick Hydro are awesome shaving machines for the average person who wants a close shave in 2 minutes because they have less time in morning for their busy lives. Who wants to be average? I'll stick to my vintage gear. I'll take my time in the morning and look forward to the shave and I'll wake up an extra 15 minutes early.

Not all carts are bad. From time to time I use them and get good shaves from them. I just think the price of them is insane.

it was many years old. perhaps that is why it did not work. i honestly do remember getting a decent shave with one. as far as woman are concerned i always hear them complaining about bumps and irritation on their legs and especially under arms. i think those areas on a woman(or man) are more sensitive then the face. i think it is really the neck that is sensitive. sensor,m3,fusion shaves my cheeks ok.

it was mentioned where i come from too. i use a mechanical watch and fountain pen as well. if it is old and archaic i probably use it. hey, they don't build 'em like they used to! i like some modern cars but that is about it. that being just because old cars are mostly used up by now. otherwise i would for sure be in a '57 vette. of course you can go back far enough that i would not dig the lifestyle at all.

I have never tried it. I'm sure it will perform close to the fushion pro glide.

So what are the best Carts? I have only used a Mach3 and get BBs from it every time. I'm planning to see how many shaves I can get out of one blade and it won't be 5 weeks. There is a house brand for sale in the supermarket that $1.67 per cartridge, not too bad a price.
I think I'm going to buy some multi blade razors and see just how good they are, might be fun might hurt like hell.

just from looks shick is on top this time. two problems for me. it is huge and expensive. my mentality does is not what shick and gillette want to see. i would rather put $200+ in a razor and spend 40 cents on the blades.

Hydro Three, Quattro, Schick Quattro Body or Hydro Five? So much Schick it's unbelieveable.

Maybe a list of all the cartridge razors we have used and liked, then the testing can begin?

After shaving with a DE for two weeks now, I can honestly say that I prefer the DE to my cartridges. The cartridges did an admirable job for a shave when I had to have one, and I'm sure that in a bind, they would still work. There really is no difference between the cartridge and the DE when it comes to shaving on my cheeks and chin as far as irritation goes. I feel that my DE gives me a closer shave on my cheeks and chin than my cartridge, and once I got my technique down, my neck suffers a lot less irritation with a DE blade than it does with a cartridge. As a lot of people around here have already said, hating on cartridges seems to be the thing to do, but I honestly think that there are more people who should at least consider a DE. Sure, theres a learning curve, and sure, it may not be for everyone, but what the heck? You only live once, right?

Just the once as far as I know.
My experience is that I get a better shave on my face with the DE and a better shave on my neck with a cart ...of course it depends on the DE I'm, still learning how to use my Fatboy but I have the Tech, New and GEM sorted and they give great shaves. I proceed with caution when using the Valet and Old Type, then there's blades what work in one razor for one face totally sucks for another.
Seems hating modern carts is the thing to do but I'm too old to be a hater and I'll try any shaving system once ... it's how I ended up here on this lovely little forum, after all.

Mach3 shaves fine and close, and without irritation for most people.
Also, read the instructions - only shave with the grain.

Also beware of using very slippery creams - while great with DEs, I've found they behave very poorly with 3, 4 and 5 blade cartridge razors, leading to people - like me - doing multiple passes in order to try get a close shave, and giving one's self a good scraping.

Internet videos are full of people using a Mach 3 or Fusion in all grain directions, like it was a DE blade. Given they have 3 or 5 blades, that's the equivalent of 12 to 20 passes with a DE blade - no wonder people wind up sore.
    Regards,
    Renato

I find that the Trac II and the 2-blade Sensor are the best cartridges.
