Has anyone heard of the krystal edge line of straight razors? From the price I saw I had assumed they aren't worth bothering about, but I thought I should check and see.

I think the rule of thumb is that you get what you pay for. All these cheap new razors you see on ebay are probably best to avoid unless explicitly said otherwise on the forums. The Wapienica is good, I'd avoid all others.

+1 Wapis rule. They're good out of the box (and fresh off the hone). But slap some lighter scales on them after you feel like the challenge and they're super shavers
