  1. Cool TGN Finest badger dressed in redwood

You may have seen my first brush attempt a while back. Having learned a thing or two, I decided to have another go at it with the same Golden Nib 22mm Finest Badger Knot Fan XH.

The wood is Redwood burl. The knot is set at just about 1/2" deep. Finish is many coats of cyanoacrylate glue, wet sanded to 2000 grit, then finished with automotive polish and wax. The photos came out nice, but it has to be seen in person.

It's a little taller than I had envisioned, but I like it overall.

That is very nice. How tall is it overall?

Thanks! Overall from tip to tail is 5.5", or about 140mm. The handle itself is 3.5"/~88mm, for about a 52mm loft.

It actually sits quite nicely in my hand - with my thumb in the cutout, the base nestles right in the center of my palm.

That is a good looking brush you got there, and a hand full of handle! I've not heard of using CA glue as a finish before, looks very nice, but why? How did you apply it?

Thanks! I used CA because it's durable, completely waterproof, and takes a ridiculous shine. I used many, many coats of polyurethane followed by wax on my last brush, and the finish was ruined after one shave (before and after below). CA also only takes a few hours, where polyurethane is 2-4 hours per coat.

It's a very common finish for pens in the woodturning world.

Thanks for the info on the finish! Never knew. How did you apply?

It's actually pretty simple - and there's a thread in here somewhere about using CA on razor scales. It works a treat.

I'm still ironing out my method, but here's what I did for these guys:

    1. Apply a coat of medium CA using a gloved finger
    2. Wait for it to dry
    3. Repeat 1+2 maybe 3 times
    4. Wet sand with 400 grit to level everything out
    5. Apply 1-2 more coats of CA
    6. Wet sand with 800, 1200, 1500 and 2000 grit
    7. Polish with automotive plastic lens cleaner/polish
    8. Apply automotive caranuba wax

That looks really nice! It reminds me of a chisel with a similar handle, but i guess they're all tools in a sense.

I made one from a piece of redwood burl. Beautiful wood but so soft and difficult for me to turn, probably not enough practice. Mine is more of a classic Grecian Urn shape, but the neck is a little narrow, because the gouge dug in a couple of times, so I carefully finshed using files sandpaper.

The only problem I see is that the handle is so light weight compared to the knot that when it is standing on the handle it's top heavy and tips over easily.
    Regards,

    Jeff

Made him a little brother from redheart. Same knot, same finish.
