    So...

It turns out that when I put the washers in on either side of the blade, it was perfectly straight in the first scales (the padauk - red colored wood). So I went ahead and finished it up!

Later today I'll write my criticisms and what I'm happy with. Some of these things will be readily apparent. Feel free to leave any feedback, as I'm looking to improve for my next one!

I think that looks great for any attempt let alone the first. A couple of suggestions - you don't need a separate drill press - if you have a dremel you can buy a stand that holds it - its perfect for ensuring pins holes are even and also means that you use two hands on more tricky stuff. In the event that your holes are slightly out of line - even them up and then use wider washers - stacked with smaller ones if you like, that will cover the extended hole.

Nice suggestion, thank you! I'll go look for that stand soon, sounds like it would be a good addition to my little workshop.
