Thread: Poorman's strop

    Default Poorman's strop

    Hi,

Should I use the suede side of the Whipped Dog Poorman's Strop?
If so should I paste it or can I use it straight?
Finally what will it do to my edge and should it be before or after the smooth side?

    Cheers,

    Paul

Do you have the paddles, too? If so, you probably don't need the suede side. If you are looking for a linen-like surface then a seat belt makes a great substitute.

If you feel a hankering to use the suede side, then check it out and make sure it isn't too rough. Mine is not suede - it is greebles and flem and rolled pieces of Mount Doom. To use it, I would smooth it down with wet/dry on a block of wood and clean it off a bit. If yours seems more like suede then it could be used. However...

You would use it before the smooth side.

Also, if you decide to put a polishing compound of some sort on it - be careful. The risk of contamination to the clean side would be high. Could you do it? Sure.

    Me? I wouldn't bother. YMMV.

I couldn't be bothered going in to my garage each time I want to strop on linen. Think I'll just stick with my leather strop - works OK so far!
Got a nice Japanese Cordova strop arriving that I picked up very cheap, looking forward to giving it a whirl.

Heh... I wouldn't do that either - I could imagine all kinds of things happening on the way there - not the least of which is a dog snagging the razor from me thinking it was a toy.

Actually, I was talking about getting a seat belt for the bathroom. You can get one at a junk yard (what's the name for them in Belgium?). Use the metal insert side to slap over a door hinge, cut it to a comfortable length. You can use more than one - dope one with diamond or something. Seal the cut edge with a flame.

Ha! Yep, that is what I was talking about. There have been mornings when that would have been useful.

As mentioned in my other thread I've got a strop coming from Japan and it has a linen side to it, hopefully I'll be able to clean it up a bit and use that one - otherwise I might have to "borrow" the seat belt from my mother-in-law's car!!!!
