Default Whats the point of scented shaving cream?

Hi, first post. Sorry if the title sounds blunt, I don't mean to be rude. I just got this cool sample pack from truefitt and hill and upon looking at all the different scents for the shaving cream and aftershave, this question popped into my mind.

I thought that aftershave is what you put on to keep a scent on your face. What's the point of using a scented shaving cream then? Is it just for enjoyment during the shave?

    Welcome to B&B

The scents are there to make the lathering process a little more enjoyable and to set each product apart.

There would be little point in having a lot of choices in soaps and creams if they all smelled like Ivory or Irish spring

Just to enjoy during the shave mostly and to give some variety!

Aftershave's primary purpose is to disinfect any minor cuts on the face from shaving. It's scent is secondary. Aftershave by definition has much less fragrance compounds in it than a cologne does, and hence the scent tends to be short lived. The scent can last for 10 minutes to perhaps a couple of hours. A proper cologne (or EDT; EDT is a step up in strength from cologne) is designed to have it's scent last for multiple hours (usually at least half a day), and often times the entire day.

So by design the scent of an Aftershave is not supposed to be long lasting (although there are some exceptions).

It's to make you happy. A good smell puts you in a good mood. There's a reason I always avoid the restroom at work when a particular co-worker heads in there.....

Um ok, so it makes it more fun to shave with a nice scent rather than smelling like wet horse or badger. I like things that smell nice I think most do. Even plain soap smell if done correctly is a pleasure.

It's a great question actually. I wondered that too initially. I thought perhaps it is what you would want to smell like thought I have realized now it is what you WANT TO smell when you shave. Does lavender get you in a good mood? How about lime? Bay rum? There are many great scents out there and in the end you get to pick which one you want to smell in the morning (or night) when you shave.

It beats shaving with something like Herban Cowboy, that stuff just smells like dirty feet once you . . . strike that, IF you can lather it it smells like dirty feet. I wouldn't shave with it even if I COULD.

A waft of C&E Nomad or Blenheim Bouquet or Martin de Candre (etc, etc..) up my nostrils during a shave is, for me, one of life's little pleasures.

Definitely. If you find a cream with a fragrance you really like... you will be surprised how luxurious and gratifying it is to shave with it.

Also... some creams do have a fragrance with enough staying power to stick with you for part of the day. It just depends on what you are using.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm new, so here is my opinion. Scent is the strongest sense committed to memory. The amount of product to choose from out there is overwhelming. Subtle differences in quality can separate them, but a pleasant scent enjoyed while you shave can help you prioritize in your mind which product you like best.

Exactly, and one of the reasons why Castle Forbes Lime shaving cream is so much more popular than all the other great shaving creams out there. Their essential oil lime scent is second to none, and while they arguable have made a very good product which provides the shaver with a very nice quality lather and shaving performance, the performance of so many other shaving dreams out there is IMHO equally as good or even clearly better than that of the Castle Forbes Lime, people still praises this cream over so many other creams, and I think it's because of the extremely fresh lime scent they have managed to create for this shaving cream.

I get average to good lather from my Castle Forbes compared to my many of my other 48 shaving creams - certainly not anything that compare to what I get from Santa Maria Novella, Proraso Red, Acca Kappa 1869 and slickness of my Castle Forbes Lime is below average when compared to Musgo Real and O Melhor IMHO, and on top of that the lather dries out faster for me than with many of my other shaving creams - again YMMV out there. I only rate my Castle Forbes Lime in my personal Top 15 now because of its lovely lime scent, which is divine. If not for that I would rank this shaving product lower than my Omega & Proraso Green shaving cream. Just being honest here

My water and Castle Forbes shaving creams does not mix well........or I have got a point with my comment !

And this thread is less than 24 hours old - if you consider that old, everything else in here is from the other century
