This Ivory method works for me for shaving. I love using Ivory when I`m traveling and it keeps down so many extra things to bring with me. I use Ivory as a shampoo, bath soap, shaving soap and even for laundry and washing dishes when I`m camping. It`s the Swiss army knife of soap for me:)
There have been many references to Williams shaving soap in this thread.
I use a Rolls Razor. I am new to brush shaving. I have tested 11 different soaps and creams and one gel.
My favourite and it ranks with what I consider the three best is R.P.Williams Shaving Cream.
It is made in Toronto. $13.00 CAN for a large 500 ml jar is reasonable.
A blob about the size of a small chick pea (garbanzo) will easily provide 4 passes.
It lathers easily. I find is easiy to control its moisture content. It does not vanish during the shave. It is unscented. And it works well to staunch the bleeding of an occasional nick. It cleans out of the brush easily as well.
Is this R.P. Williams the same as the Williams frequently referred to and lauded in this thread?

I disagree.
Most any bar of soap works better than that. Some aerosols are better than that, but Barbasol is just horrid.
White Safegard with Aloe works reasonably well for shower shaving and works better than Barbaol in a pinch when shaving at the sink.
When I travel, the hotel soap from Hampton Inn actually works quite well and lathers very well with a brush. It's every bit as good as Williams (for whatever that's worth).

My father used Dial for 30+ years. He was cheap and said it was the only soap that didn't irritate his skin. So that's what I did for 30 years until I switched to a DE Razor. Now I use shave-specific soaps and they work much better.
I've always been a wet-shaver; but only the past 2 years have I been a DE shaver.
This is one of those days that the pages of history teach us are best spent lying in bed.
I used Yardley English Lavender bar soap that you can get at the dollar store.
Nice and slick, but the lather disappears too fast.
It's better for the shower.
