I opted to just make my own. Beeswax, soy wax, petroleum jelly and a bit of fragrance. I found some recipes on the web, some suggested Murphy's Oil Soap, just couldn't go there....
Oh, this Twinkie thing, it ain't over yet. -Tallahassee
Looks like nobody ventured any other suggestions. I've seen the wax for sale at West Coast Shaving, and was considering buying from them and they have the Firehouse wax. Just didn't want to leave you hangin! I just saw some recipes on line and since I already had supplies on hand I made my own.

Sorry, I've no idea where to get samples. I would recommend Firehouse Wacky Tacky. I've been using it for the last 7 months. I've found it easy to use and it provides great hold. The only other wax I have used is the Clubman. It was OK but only the neutral color was available locally and it didn't blend well with my dark moustache. Firehouse is also stiffer to start with, which I found made styling easier.
Given the relatively small amounts needed or available, I've never seen samples available. I like the Firehouse but haven't used the Wacky Tacky. Oregon Wild Hair had good hold, but the color turned my white stache yellow! Gold Sachs is good though pricey. Currently using. Lucky Tiger in combo with Firehouse. Still want to fry making my own someday as well. Clubman is just OK. Stay away from CVS house brand.

Another path you might try is glue. This guy, http://handlebarmoustachelife.com/mo...bar-moustache/, advocates styling with glue sticks and in later posts craft glues (http://handlebarmoustachelife.com/mo...-aleenes-glue/). Both are cheap and available in most places. I tried glue stick but didn't care for it. I think climate is a big factor though. On the site he says he lives in Las Vegas where the dry climate helps dry the glue quickly.
I haven't seen samplers anywhere. I use Firehouse dark which works fine in a red moustache and the hold is good. I have also tried Stern (too expensive and not as good hold) and Dr. Dittmar which had a pleasant scent but never seemed to harden. It acted like you had styled with petroleum jelly.
