    Default I give up, what's a "notch"

I see auctions describing a razor as either having one or not having one on occasion, Mr Razor lists some Aristocrats as notch or no notch. I know what a notch is on a straight, but I cannot figure out what it is on a DE razor. I've tried searching all over here, the wiki and on google, I've tried looking at pictures of razors described as having or not having a notch but I can't figure it out. Maybe it's just me missing something obvious, but can anyone explain to me what it is?

On a TTO razor, the part that fits up through the center of the blade..... at the top of that piece the metal usually goes sharply outward, as if to keep the blade in place. Those outward-going parts are called notches. On some of the older late-40's superspeeds the top of that metal piece was completely flat; those razors are notch-less. Some of the Aristocrats are similar to those 40s SSs.

Ahhhhhh ok. Totally not what I have ever heard described as a notch in any way shape or form *LOL* There have been a couple times I thought I had figured out what notch meant, but then I'd see another razor description and be knocked right back to square one. Thanks, I appreciate it.

Its purpose is to catch the blade and help extract it out the dispenser and into the TTO head.

Look at the center bar that fits in the slot in the razor blade.

Later models had a "notch" to hook onto the inside of the razor blade slot, and enable it to be pulled out of the blade dispenser without touching the blade.

In straights purpose of notch is to help to open blade with wet hands etc. and nothing to do with shaving. Also a decoration meaning.

Neither does the notch on the Super Speed in question, its just for loading the blade and has nothing to do with shaving part......And if im not mistaking, the notch in the straight razor is for opening with wet hands which give the straight razor notch a function not a decorating meaning.

That's why I wrote word also in my last sentence. The main reason is that function. In addition some people seems to like the decorative meaning of that notch.

Are either notches or no-notches more collectable, in your opinion? (group question)

Only as far as having or not having one would indicate a potential date range.
The date is what is significant to folks, as indicated by a notch or lack of one.

And if you shave with them, it really is easier to load a blade from a dispenser into a razor with a notch.

I agree with Phil, The only real reason is for loading the Speedpak blades, no other function.
